SPORTSMAN RACING: The oldest bracket tournament in the land has attracted entries from all over the western United States and Canada. Expanded for 2008, the sportsman purse will offer a guaranteed $75,000 in payouts. Packed into four amazing days and nights, the nightly winner of the Bracketeers will take home $5,000 to win Thursday, $5,000 to win Friday, $5,000 to win Saturday and $5,000 to win on Sunday night, along with a $1,000 cash bonus payout to the overall four-night point's champion. In Pro, the winners will pocket $2,000 on Thursday, $2,000 on Friday, $2,000 on Saturday and $2,000 on Sunday, plus $400 to point's victor. New for this year, Heavy (11.50 to 14.99) will be contested each day, along with Snow/Bike, both of which will vie for points and a championship, too. Meridian Automotive & Machine will again present the overall four-night series, which includes NHRA Wally National Dragster trophies to the overall point's winners. The Top Fire class returns to the Nightfire during the weekend. This special "race within a race" will pit the quickest 12 full-bodied rides on one side of the ladder against the quickest 12 open wheelers. Qualifying will take place on Thursday and Friday evening, followed by the opening round of Top Fire beginning on Saturday and the final rounds concluding on Sunday. And for those who might be new to the Bracketeers, this will mark the thirty-third year Firebird has hosted one of the west's biggest bracket tournaments. Rod Reunion in Bakersfield, along with the Nightfire at Firebird.
And for those who aspire to win one of the BIG THREE, the Nightfire
is unquestionably one of the most sought after titles in all of Drag
Racing, especially when you consider the nearly $90,000 in cash prize
money on the line in the Professional classes. The Pro fields include:
AA/Funny Cars presented by Carl's Jr., AA/Fuel Dragster presented
by Valvoline, AA/Fuel Altered presented by Western States/CAT, and
the West Coast Pro Modifieds presented by Larry Miller Sundance Dodge. Points and records will be on the line both AA/Funny Car and AA/Fuel Dragster in the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series. In nostalgia AA/Funny Car, a fleet of fiberglass fantastics will be gunning for the Nightfire crown. Recent Mission winner Mike Grekul will wheel the Plueger & Gyger Mustang against many of the premiere teams in the western United States. Offering a full 16-car field, the qualifying alone should be totally off-the-charts under the lights. No doubt, the pits may very well resemble a fiberglass forest, which certainly traces to the roots of the original Nightfire 500's back to the early 70's. The line-up for the AA/Fuel Dragster eliminator is shaping up to be a dandy, too. All the heavy hitters are coming, including Oklahoma's Troy Green who currently leads the Heritage Series point's standings and his nearest challenge Brad Green with his Bowling Green winning "Agent Orange" Fueler. Fuel Altereds will be headed up by none other than Lisa Coil, yes, the wife of the famed John Force crew chief Austin Coil, who will be behind the wheel of Tom Motry's "Drastic Plastic" sedan from Chicago. A dramatic fields of West Coast Pro Modifieds will compete this August in western Idaho, too. Trying to avenge his runner-up finish from one year ago, Dennis Radford with his zoomy AAR `70 Plymouth Cuda, team-mate Billy Harper from Kentucky, and a pit full of other teams will be racing at the annual doorslammer shootout. have the opportunity to determine - once and for all - who is the
"Top Dog" in Las Vegas. Midnight Mayhem Presented By MetroPCS - The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's popular street-legal drag racing program - will present an exciting new competition on Friday, Aug. 1. The inaugural Dog Days Street Showdown will pair the fastest street-legal cars in Las Vegas. Friday night, during Midnight Mayhem Presented By MetroPCS, the fastest cars in Las Vegas will shoot it out in four thrilling rounds of drag racing action. The winner will receive $1,000 cash, a trophy and a jacket. Qualifying: Midnight Mayhem participants whose cars ran faster than 115 mph during events on either June 13 or June 20 earned an invitation to compete on Aug. 1. As soon as the car posts a top speed of 115 mph or faster in the quarter mile, it was inspected to ensure it has DOT-approved tires and a street-legal exhaust system. Eligibility: Open to any eligible Midnight Mayhem participant driving a street-legal car. Car must have DOT-approved treaded tires (no slicks) and a muffled exhaust system (no open headers). Car must be driven to the track on the night it qualifies as well as the night of Aug. 1. Car cannot be unloaded in the parking lot - it must enter the LVMS property under its own power. Program is not open to motorcycles. All other rules are off the table - and the use of nitrous oxide is encouraged. Race format: All racers earning an invitation

I can't complain though as I knew going in that July and August would have no breaks and be a total bear to deal with. Half way through and I'm almost toast...almost. A partial day off yesterday and I'm ready for another month solid of nonstop drag racing online and off. For all those waiting and wondering, this week will include finalizing of the Yakima video and all the individual work from that race, along with a video feature on the Mission Open. I'm outta here Thursday to Medicine Hat so will be out of phone and e-mail range the entire time. There's also the many daily e-mails of various requests, etc. that I'll get to asap, but always miss a few so please feel free to remind me as you wish. LP steps down as MRP Media Director First of all I tried to clean up the MRP photographer situation that is, in my opinion, the worst of any track I have ever seen. When I say worst, I mean there are too many people out there extending more effort on selling than actual 'media' work. This is something few other tracks allow, as they call it a 'Media Pass' for a reason. After a few months of going gung ho, it basically got worse instead of better so my work there failed. The complaints came from all directions from shooters to racers. As a result look for all kinds of newbies out there over the next year or so shooting and selling - something that MRP has basically always allowed since the day it opened. You'll all find out just how many shooters I didn't let in over the past couple of years who wanted to come out, make some quick cash, not give a crap about the sport, get in people's way and generally just make it a bad scene. Then again I could be totally wrong. More selling shooters at MRP could be an advantage to the racers and the track. A second, and more pressing reason, was the safety aspect. Being partly responsible for who goes out there with cameras, I implemented what were some of the strictest safety rules of any strip anywhere. Again it was a failure because I didn't get any backup in enforcing these rules, in fact most just ignored them or called me down on them. Whether the track will stay with these rules, change them or trash them is now their decision not mine. After witnessing a very scary incident on the line just this weekend and learning of another where a person was hit (but fortunately not badly injured) by a car at another D6 track, I just won't be put in a position of possible legal action when some shooter or crew person gets hurt (or worse) out there. I say "when" because I know it will happen again unless the rules are changed by NHRA & IHRA - not just some small time track media guy. The chances of which are slim and none. I'm sick and tired of policing the starting line, I'm sick of seeing people care more about their shots and their egos than their safety. I constantly heard "I can do this at all the other tracks", along with many others doing stuff when I was not there they wouldn't do when I was - which I actually have on video/audio thanks to YouTube. About my only lasting legacy in this regard is the new closer position on the outside of the walls so that crew people, friends and family can get better, closer shots from a relatively safe position. I ended up spending more effort dealing with people than doing what I really should be doing - media work. There are a number of other reasons that I won't bore you with, but I'm done with this job and have no idea if MRP will give it to somebody else or leave it blank. I'll continue to help them in my capacity of Webmaster (a position I have no intention of leaving) and still do much of what the 'Media Director' did behind the scenes, but out there on race day, I'm just another shooter again, and have no problem with that at all. Have fun folks, you don't have that asshole starting line policeman at MRP to deal with any more. Do what you want, when you want, where you want, I no longer give a shit. If I happen to get a shot of you flying ten feet in the air breathing your last breath, I assure you the only people who will ever see it will be those who work for track safety. A harsh analogy, but one I have little doubt may well come to pass someday as more people come out with still and video cameras. Safety rules such as those I tried to put in place don't even exist at most other drag strips. My dream of making my home strip the safest of them all, and a model for others to copy, remains just that.

From the Dept. of OOPS A major oops for not including perhaps the most underrated, seldom discussed, but most traveled PS dude in the northwest - Jay Syvertsen. From the day we saw him go off the end of Eagle in a twin turbo Nova coming to a rest a couple of feet away from a rock the size of the car many years ago, to winning this race in 2007, we have seen Jay Syvertsen grow into an experienced and very entertaining driver. There are no smaller feet in these cars on the west coast. He drives like the California guys. He shows off like the California guys. I mean nobody in the northwest has a heavier foot than Jay. Everybody talks alot about the Mustang guys...DD...TPR...Lane...etc. but seldom do we spend much time jawin about Jay Syvertsen, and that's a shame cause he's been to more Pro Street races on the west coast over the past couple of years than anybody else north of California. Has done pretty well too, but has yet to make a major mark in the sport the way Mozniks and Sangha did last year in Las Vegas...the TPR record speed run at Seattle earlier this year...the sheer legacy of Don Murray...along with the reign of Rash Dhaliwal the past couple of seasons...and most recently Brian Lane's near legal 6.49 at this very drag strip just a few weeks ago. Jay has yet to really have his 'moment' and that's maybe why we 'forget' him on occasion. One of these days that team's gonna put a pass or two together and make everybody stand up and take notice. Maybe this weekend, for he is the defending race champion after all. The ole Chevy'll be there, blower screaming, Jay drivin the wheels offn it. Eagle Motorplex Nostalgic Highlights Video Don Murray sortin it out for this coming weekend Larry: Last week I visited the spectacular new facility that our parent company, Speedway Motorsports, Inc., is building in Concord, North Carolina. I've attached a photo from Friday that shows this amazing facility that will be the sister track to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Zmax Dragway is located just across the street from Lowe's Motor Speedway and immediately next door to The Dirt Track. Construction is going great and everyone is excited about the first Carolina Nationals that will be held there on September 11-14, 2008. It's a magnificient track that has to be seen to believed. Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car should take up right where it left off last year when Terry Capp quite simply destroyed the record books. With a night session this time around look for those marks to fall again. You can bet Bucky Austin will have something more to say this year than last as The Northwest Hitter has gone on to become the dominant car in the category. Toss in a dozen or so more including some new pieces such as Twig Zeigler's Plymouth and the pits are gonna be turned into a nitro fiberglass forest! More nitro in the form of the two wheel variety will also make for an amazing show. Lead by perennial champion Ron Houneit and the new sensation Damian Cownden of Victoria, winner of the Edmonton national event earlier this month and the potential of seeing the Top Fuel Harleys in the low six second zone at possibly 220 mph is high indeed! A full field of eight bikes will make this more than just a warm up for the big CMDRA race here August 9/10. The alky cars always put on a show here, racing families like the Sitkos of Edmonton, the Parkers of Oregon, and a bunch more locals layin down some great runs. Of note the IHBA nostalgia alky floppers will not be here this year. Then there is Pro Street, which for 2008 has record-breaking potential like never before. Not since the days of Braid and Murray has a street car race been more anticipated than this one. The quickest and fastest street cars the northwest has ever known are all coming out for the first time in a long time. Garrett Richards and the gang from TPR will be here in the world's fastest pickup truck, Brian Lane who laid down an unofficial 6.49 here just one month ago, Draggin Don Murray in his stout new turbo Corvette, Trevor Wilms in a new 706 inch nitrous '04 Corvette, Rash Dhaliwal looks to have the new alky system in his Mustang sorted out with some six second passes a few weeks ago, and we hear rumors that Dal Sangha's newly skinned Ford may also show. Will the new Moznik Camino be here? Will Dale Pedersen bring that awesome Buick down from the great white north? Will any of the other US cars make an appearance? Whatever happens this will be the BIG ONE for street cars in the northwest for 2008. Toss in all the door cars and dragsters in Top Comp, Stock/SS combo and a bunch more NHRA and bracket troops and you have the makings of a classic summer weekend at MRP. Midnight update A long trip home tonight after getting almost to Boston Bar before finding out I had to go back to Spencers Bridge and across to Merritt. There had been a very bad crash in one of the tunnels, it opened about 11:00 pm tonight for those who waited, so if your guys aren't home just yet, they are still up in no-cell-phone- land, and on the way now. Before a quick Ashcroft report a bunch of really cool notes from Seattle We'll begin with a first ever National Event win for Stock Eliminator Mike Lewis! A Super Comp runner-up to the guy they got my golf cart from almost three years ago, Dennis Kooker. He bulbed, but ya know Dennis will be smilin tonight like he always is. Curt Geise in Super Gas and Jeff Jackson Jr. in Super Street makes it one of the best showings ever for D6 racers. Mark Faul takes out Brad Plourd in an all-northwest Super Stock final, and Igor came out second best in Comp with an runner up effort for Harrison, Lougheed and the crew from North Van. Top if off with Brian Hough winning TAFC and it was a brilliant Sunday in Kent! So many other locals did well - a strong performance by Shawn Cowie all weekend long, Evanchuck, Nemeth, Hugh Ridley's ride goin into the 6.40s this weekend! (official final round results)

Open It all came down to basically a business decision as the Mission race has never been one where HH does much business at all. The Medicine Hat people have been wanting HH to come out for a number of years now, and when they asked again, we decided to take them up on it. Plans are to make an event video that will be for sale later in 2008 plus offer our video services to all the racers attending what is the biggest NHRA race in the province. We're really looking forward to our first trip to the track, and our first journey to Alberta in many years. Hopefully it'll be the start of something big, but will depend a lot on how many racers want videos of their rides. Jirka Kaplan of Calgary shows up at the Woodburn points race with maybe the baddest gasser ever built. Traditionalists may take offense to that claim, but even they stand up and take notice when the former Comp roadster record holder is here with fellow Albertans Les Davenport and Roger Bateman.
The gorgeous winged '63 Stingray topped qualifying in Top Sportsman running 6.720/207.56 mph. All on it's first time out on a very hot Woodburn surface. Kinda doubt it, but would be kinda kool to see Kaplan at the Mission Loafers race eh?
Mel will be remembered as one of the most colorful, friendly and
hard charging racers at Van Isle Dragways. He is survived by his
wife Cheryl. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later
date.

WOODBURN, Ore. NHRA Northwest division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors tackled the quarter-mile at Woodburn Dragstrip this weekend in the 31st Les Schwab Challenge. In the end, defending division champions Thomas Bayer in Top Alcohol Dragster and Brian Hough in Top Alcohol Funny Car logged their first wins of 2008. Fontana, Calif., resident Bayer, who is wheeling the rail owned and tuned by former division champ Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., qualified in the No. 1 spot and had a bye run in the first round due to an odd number of entries for the TAD class. In the semis he beat Justin Davis of Murietta, Calif., before taking on another former division champ in Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash. Bayer laid down a 5.556-second, 258.24 mph pass that was more than enough to cover Severances abbreviated 9.478-second run. Hough, who hails from Junction City, Ore., started the day from the No. 4 qualifying spot. In the first round he beat Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson and in the semifinals Hough got the win over No. 1 qualifier Sean OBannon of Fontana, Calif. In the final, Hough made a 6.015-second, 245.83 mph pass against Jason Rupert of Yorba Linda, Calif. Ruperts run got out of control about mid-way through and resulted in a crash. Rupert was unhurt in the incident but he handed the win to Hough. Glendale, Ariz., resident Dean Carter earned the win in Comp Eliminator, beating out Doug Lambeck of Corona Del Mar, Calif. Super Stock racer Tony Mandella, Upland, Calif., wheeled his 90 Camaro to the win over Art Congdon, Calgary, Alb., in his 91 Calais. Jody Lang, Puyallup, Wash., drove his 81 Malibu to the win in Stock Eliminator, ousting Hal Sorensen, Vancouver, Wash., in the final. In Super Comp, John Young, Vancouver, Wash., bested Bob Woodruff, Maple Valley, Wash. Buckley, Wash., racer Mike Ferderer earned the win in Super Gas, taking out John Whitmore, Myrtle Creek, Ore. The Super Street winner was Thomas Golden, Aloha, Ore., over Tony Hernandez of Buckley, Wash. Top Sportsman winner, Seattles Barry Hobson, beat Daryl Hemley of Burley, Wash., while in Top Dragster, Bill Maness, Vancouver, Wash., took home the hardware over Mike Henderson, Tacoma, Wash. All cars participating in this race must be Ford Bodied or Powered, no other vehicle will be allowed to enter in the Ford race. Turbo Thunder will be holding a race at our facility this weekend. There are 2 classes for this event, they are Top Turbo (11.49 and faster) and Turbo Pro (11.50 and slower). Car Club Challenge will also be returning to Bremerton Raceway this weekend as well as the NW Truckin' Drags and the Northwest Pro Street Association Meet #4. Truck Town's junior Dragster Series #8 will start at noon. The gates open at 8 am, racing starts at 9 am. Tech cards are $35.00, car and driver. Gate admission is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for active duty military and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Racers are vying for points leading to divisional and national championships. Reigning division Top Alcohol Dragster champ Thomas Bayer leads the qualifiers in his class while John Evanchuk set the pace in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Bayer, a resident of Fontana, Calif., who is wheeling the entry owned and tuned by former division champ Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., laid down a 5.486-second, 262.16 mph pass for the No. 1 spot. Delta, B.C., racer Shawn Cowie is the No. 2 qualifier with a 5.632-second, 258.84 mph effort. Evanchuk hails from Edmonton, Alb. His 5.933-second, 240.00 mph run was more than enough to cover second-place qualifier Russ Parker of Salem, Ore. Parker ran 6.004 seconds at 241.35 mph. J.D. Zink, Chico, Calif., heads the Comp Eliminator field while Don Little, Westley, Calif., is atop the Super Stock contingent in his 70 Charger. Edmonton will finish tomorrow after more rain tonight. Damien Cownden of Victoria will meet Sultan Washington's John Breckenridge in tomorrow's Nitro Bike final, the Victoria rider laying down low ET with a 6.666 Hell of a run DAMIEN....Delehay lost in the Pro Mod semis while Spiering goes to Monday's bash against Thomas Patterson...most of the sportsman classes appear to be in rounds one or two. Weather report is good. Am home from two days and nights of wild action in sunny...SUNNY (he he) Yakima and even managed to stop in and catch today's racing at sunny (rub it in eh) MRP. It's been a long three days, but rest assured however, we'll have some really, really cool stuff for ya as we were treated to over two dozen bitchin nitro cars, doorslammers, blown roadsters, dragsters an floppers at Renegade Raceway. It's raining, it's pouring, but ole Bob is no longer snoring...welcome back Mr. Wilson
Happy 4th of July to all our Amercan friends! Am in Yakima this weekend for the big nitro flopper, Pro Mod, Pro Street, Top Comp, Doorslammer, burnout contest, wheelstand contest weekend...Carlson, Murdoch, Jeffry & Bob Wilson in Edmonton where I hear there is but one Pro Stock on site as of last nite. All kinds of goofy stuff goin on in this sport right now with no signs of let up. Am hoping I can make it back early enuf Sunday to get out to MRP to see the finals and pick up results. Please don't call or e-mail, as I won't be around to reply till Monday.
SPECIAL MRP Canada Day Video Happy Canada Day everybody! Of upcoming videos, sponsor thoughts, last weekend's
results, etc etc etc Last night I tried the long-planned ad reworking of this page and failed. It just won't work, so am now faced with going in another direction, so I'm putting out a request for ideas on how to sponsor our online videos. Putting advertising directly on them is chancy as all the YouTube and Streetfire-type sites do not allow this...ya I know people do it anyway, but if somebody is paying me I don't want to chance it. Hosting them myself is out of the question due to costs and bandwidth issues. If any of you potential sponsors have any ideas how I can monetize all the freebee videos I've been doing lately please let me know for as my paying work increases, the free online stuff (That I've actually been using to show potential sponsors just what we can do) may well come to a screeching halt. |
