Frank hammers quickest nitrous Pro Street run in history
as SCSN closes in on all time quickest field Three years ago a confident Chris Blair told HH personally that they were "going after Orlando" in an effort to make the Street Car Super Nationals the biggest and baddest street car race in the world. He figured it would take at least five years, but one might argue that the 2007 event at THE STRIP at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, organized by Mel Roth, owner of the Pacific Street Car Association, may well claim that title right now. Well maybe not, but after what they saw today in Las Vegas it appears only a matter of time. It's been quite a day at LVMS as the third incarnation of this door car extravaganza completes day one of qualifying. Missoula, Montana's Lee Frank brings his West Coast Pro Mod '07 nitrous Corvette out and not only lays down his best ever time by nearly a tenth, but destroys the west coast Pro Street all time record along with the all time Pro Street nitrous mark with a run of 6.255 at 219.58mph! Look for the another all-time mark to fall tomorrow as they seek a 32 car field quicker than the 7.002 set in Orlando. Right now they are at 7.13 with a bunch of cars that can go much quicker than that on the outside looking in. Of note, defending champ Vinnie Budano is not here. Also, Mike Moran did not better his first session number of 6.636/222.25 in that second stanza, but despite an on again, off again pass went through the eyes at an amazing 235mph to claim top speed by a ton! Just an amazing field of forty entries, 28 of which are in the sixes, many well over 200mph. Six are over 220 including Surrey's Dal Sangha in the number 24 spot with a big 221.20. - not bad for a car built right here in British Columbia. Other northwest regulars include Jay Syvertson's 6.551/217.70 in the nine hole, The TPR truck of Garrett Richards just ahead of Sangha in 23rd with a fine 6.765/203.86, Trevor Lowe right there in 25 at 6.885/216.24, and Brian Lane's 7.080/158.97 good for 31. It's a great showing for the northwest guys against the best cars on the planet. In Edelbrock 10.5 Outlaw Street, Spiro Pappas laid down a shocking 6.792 at 212.36 mph, which has to be one of the greatest runs ever in that class, though I understand the rules for this class varies around the country. And right in the thick of it is Surrey's Dale Moznik, his 7.284@188.96 good for sixth in the super competitive class. A very smooth day at the track according to our source in the tower 'JJ', no accidents, but plenty of big bumber-bashers that resulted in some re-entry carnage. Hopefully somebody has some pics n video to post soon. We'll keep updating as we can, thanks again to JJ for keeping us posted, and don't forget all the other sites covering this one. Street cars..and trucks...and everything else Yes the SCSN III should be awesome. Nearly 50 Pro Street entries, buncha ten fives, and all the rest. Good thing they have some bracket classes so one can sometimes take a pee break. Sorry Mark...About the only thing I would love to try at that race sometime is to have a street cruise down the 'other' Strip a night or two before the race starts. They've closed down parts of that street for ricer cars, so why not the real bad boiz? As for last weekend I guess the Florida folks are not quite as experienced handling rain outs as us wet coasters. Judging from the comments on how it was handled, 2008 down there could be slim, but I've heard it all too many times before and bet half the guys whining now will be back in twelve months. Roth and Blair probably have big smiles on their faces right about now though. One local team ready to haul down real soon are those fun
fellas at Total Performance Racing. Check out the new paint on that big
blown Silverado.
LVMS and beyond Then it's SEMA - the show that's all but impossible to see in five days or less, followed by the Street Car Supernationals at THE STRIP Nov. 1-4 that should feature 50 Pro Street rides of all shapes and sizes goin at it for west coast supremacy. Coming just one week after the Real World Street Nats in Orlando, it's a grand time for doorslammer fans. HH will not be at the race as we simply cannot ad to our already stupid-busy street car schedule. Besides, the race is already covered to death by video crews, most of whom have many more resources than this lil one-man-show. Look for a number of Northwest racers to attend including Trevor Lowe, Dal Sangha, Brian Lane in a new '63 Corvette Pro Streeter, Trevor Wilms in the former 'bad Bob' El Camino (who will be out with major twin turbo EFI power in '08), The Mozniks Camino, and the TPR troops an dat bad azz pickup. Probably a bunch more, we'll update ya if we get more info. Beyond that it's banquet time and the last race we know (or care about) being the big Thanksgiving Weekend Bracket Nationals, where else, but LVMS November 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. Looking even beyond that we very much wanna be back in Vegas early in 2008 for either one of the nitro test session or maybe even the winter PSCA race. In the meantime we have lots to do both here and the MRP site, so have fun if yur goin to Vegas, Seattle or whatever next week. We'll do our best to keep the updates comin here all winter long.on't bother trying to contact me for anything for the next two weeks. Don't worry about Garlits, as we have a full time house sitter...sorry 'cat sitter' coming in to keep the little fart company. As for 'your' video or photo project, we're full right up to the time we leave so if you haven't asked by now, wait'll November. As for 'Wicked'...it's been a month since I've touched it, but have a 'plan' to release soon after I get back. Stay tuned. |
Anyone interested in sending
congrats to the northwest racers, And if you have photos or video or know where some is posted of this event please let us know and we'll link to it, or you can send it to us to post. ATTA BOYS!
Way to show that there is some real contenders up here in the pacific NW. If you work out the stats between # of Div. 6 racers/other div and see who is going rounds.the 6ers have a damn good average!

Continued from HH I didn't have to worry about points and I actually had some people to cheer for! People I knew. People who were actually going rounds...people who were not really expected to go that many rounds...damn, but it was fun! Thanks to the considerable efforts of Jason 'JJ' Murray (ya that JJ), a guy who for a while reported for Drag Race Central dot com, HH had the best same day SCSN coverage on the web. Well, yes we didn't cover all the classes until the finals, but overall I am very proud of what we got done. Got done with no pre-race planning. This just came together when I asked LVMS for some results Friday. Next thing I knew JJ was on the phone, on my e-mail like crazy. All this as he worked the computer in the tower for the race! When I asked if any photos were available, track photogs Doug & Becky Kranz and their crew sent everything I requested very quickly. It was a true team effort that was just very satisfying to be a part of. I will give credit to the boyz at yellowbullet.com for being the elapsed time winners. I gotta tell ya it was a few minutes from when I read on their board that Moznik had won before I got confirmation from JJ. I wanted so bad to post it, but knowing the rather radical nature of the YB posters had to wait just to make sure. Then again, I could have posted the actual results in Pro Street and Outlaw a couple of hours before they actually ran when Dragin Don Murray phoned me and predicted the outcome right down to Pappas breaking in the final. I think Donny should buy a lottery ticket today. As for 'our guys' in Vegas, they all did great, they all qualified, but two really stand out. Dal Sangha and Roy Moznik. Both teams have come from the streets of the lower mainland to reach the very top level of the sport, and have made a lot of locals very proud indeed. Hopefully this is the catalyst that sends street car racing to new levels in the Pacific Northwest. We have world class quality, all we need is some more quantity. Though the Moznik Brothers won, I have to begin with Sangha. Not being there, and not yet talking to anybody is tough, but his numbers speak for themselves. Over 220, topping out at 221 mph...running his best times ever...going to the final four at the biggest race the left coast has ever seen, against some of the best in the world...taking out west coast legend Ed Thornton in the quarter finals...having the unbelievable luck of getting the first round win when number one qualifier Lee Frank fails to stop at the scales after Sangha red lgihts beside him...but maybe most surprising of all were his lights from that first round on. Never known as a 'leaver' by any stretch, the little built-in-BC Mustang had some of the best lights in the class save for winner Moran. Obviously these turbo dudes are getting that part of the equation sorted out, something the blower and nitrous guys have rarely had to concern themselves with. A huge congratulations to Dal and his team as they come off the greatest weekend in northwest Pro Street history. And then there was that blue El Camino. Rumor was they spent four days installing a new Fulton nitrous motor just for this race, and ended up winning the biggest bash against the baddest west coat players, and running their best numbers ever. One could say they backed into it (those east coast guys), but like a famous Floridian Donald Glenn Garlits once said "Days and years from now nobody'll care how ya won, just WHO won". Talk about a team who has struggled. From the days when the blue car came out together with the shoebox, the brothers Moznik never gave up through thick and thin. This morning they awaken champions, and you can bet that long tow home is gonna be a breeze. When we heard Trevor Lowe was going to Vegas, we had a good feeling. Here was a guy who has already proven himself in the Pro Mod ranks entering his first ever 'street car' race. In typical fashion, the big black Camaro stepped up gradually and ended up qualified number seven against some of the biggest names in the sport. Unfortunately their day ended early, but you can bet they opened some southwest eyes bigtime. Will they run any other such races? If the money is there, bet on it. Then there was big Jay qualifying way up there and going a couple of rounds before breakage set in. This boy's on track, watch out in '08. And how about Brian Lane with an all new car? Running sixes first time out, you know he'll be there next year. And those fun-loving boys from Total Performance Racing. It don't matter what happens these guys just keep on smiling and working hard. The new truck looked great and ran real hard. Congrats to every damn one of 'em. What this all boils down to is we're on the eve of what could well be the biggest year of street legal drag racing ever in the Northwest. Track managers setting up their 2008 schedules had better pay attention as I already know every single one of these guys has a standing invitation to every PSCA and WCHR event next year, and it would be criminal to loose them to that. Don't laugh as with a strong Canadian dollar they may well head south lots. Both Pro Street and Outlaw look great for the future and performances such as we saw the past four days prove the Northwest has a bunch of racers who can go anywhere and win. Anywhere. And it's only gonna get better thanks to what all these people did at what could well be called the best street car race in the world at the best drag strip in the world. That's as good as it gets fellas. Well done, thanks for what you all did , and have a safe trip home! Hopefully somebody can get the video of the race and set up some kinda party for these guys in the new year...hmmm. -Larry Pfister
