The first couple of dozen orders of 'The Video' are shipping today. The online system will follow asap. Thank you again for the support. HH is safe for until the end of June, beyond that it will depend on these sales.
Word comes in from Firebird Raceway in Boise of a spectacular Fox Hunt Pro Mod show last weekend. The Viper of Oregon's Dennis Radford (former driver of the Killer Instinct Duster) running a track record 6.48!! on Saturday before getting by John Scialpi in the final .59-213.06 to the 57 Chevy's 6.62 at 212.16. Some bad news to pass on from here was a top end accident involving the Super Gas Pepsi roadster of LeGrand Oregon's Pat Bruce. From all reports the car just "took off like a plane" and went for quite a tumble. Bruce is reported to be out of the hospital now. For more on the event and an address to send Bruce a letter go to the Firebirdonline site.
COMING WEEKEND NOTES
At least two racers we know of from D6 are traveling to Chitown this weekend for the Lucas Oil Products NHRA Nationals. Good luck and safe racing to Steve Federlin, Mark Hentges and their related teams! Hentges is coming back after a "rough" first round outing in Topeka. You can bet the Airtime Aviation team is ready to get back on track.
This weekend will see the bracket bombers and the CPSA streeters return to Mission Raceway. Look for Don Murray to tune his Corvette for "consistent 7.50s" while Glen Braid will also be here (Friday as well at the High School race) doing the same thing. Should be a good one as a number of other cars in Pro Street are also approaching the mid sevens. Among the other entertaining heads-up classes they run check this just in:
Hi LP , Just a reminder about are new class were trying out this
weekend .
It's called EFI DRAG RADIAL, a class for late model car with Electronic Fuel
Injection and radial tires, with traction devices limited to simple bolt ons.
Any type of car can run, like a Porsche, Toyota, Viper, Ferrari, Corvette, it's
not limited to domestic rides. It should be cool as you could see things like
a huffed 5.0 going up against a turbo 911. If you could let your readers know
that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Don Murray . CPSA President
If you're into drag bikes take your pick this weekend as Edmonton hosts CMDRA event while down in Seattle the AHDRA makes their first of only two northwest appearances. The other is Sept. 8/9 at Woodburn.
VAN ISLE REUNION INFO
Back in the 60's, the Quarter Milers Car Club of Victoria ran
San Cobble Raceways on an old cement company road in Cobble Hill, north of Victoria.
Jerry Ruth made several passes on this road. In the mid 70's a private owner
built Van Isle Dragways which was an NHRA sanctioned track located in Mill Bay.
This track was taken over by the Island Dragway Promoters who ran it until the
early 70's when it was sold for residential development. Van Isle ran alternate
weekends with Mission and was host to many pacific northwest racers. Old photos
from both tracks can be found at www.quartermilers.com
.
Recently some old members of the Quarter Milers and Island Dragway Promoters
have re-united and will host a San Cobble/Van Isle re-union. This event will
be held in Victoria during the weekend of Sept 13-15, 2002 at the Esquimalt
Sports Center. There will be a car show featuring nostalgia drag race cars (and
if room permits modern drag race cars), a Friday night social where old racers
can get re-aquainted, tell war stories, view some great nostalgia photos, films
and memorabilia and perhaps test their reaction times on a practice tree. On
Saturday afternoon there will be a round table featuring some surprise "names"
from the world of drag racing who will talk about the history of the sport in
the pacific northwest. On Sat night there will be a banquet and dance featuring
the Time Benders, one of Canada's best known nostalgia bands.
This is primarily a reunion for racers (and race cars) who ran
at San Cobble and Van Isle but everyone is welcome. In particular we are looking
for nostalgia race cars from that era for the car show. There will be no entry
fee for show cars and no trophies. This is a non profit event. Registration,
host hotel and our web site will be announced soon.
Racers who ran at either track are invited to contact Rick Gonder in Victoria
@ (250)380-1096 or at argond@home.com.
I'll keep you posted as our plans progress. Plan to be here!!

Canada West Pro Gas Association's second and third races are
now complete.
Congratulations to Steve Ellis on his first and second ever CWPGA event wins.
Steve has been racing with the association since its inception, and despite
winning the season championship in 1994, he had yet to win an event. Until Saturday
- where Steve's Corvette defeated Ken Orser in the final round. To top the weekend
off, Steve did it again, defeating Joe "the Sharkman" Mellof in Sunday's
final. Congratulations Steve! For more info check their website at http://www.geocities.com/cwpga2001

Greetings from HH Land. Guess what? It's done....well more or less. About 13 hours ago I began the last leg of this 22 day journey and feel that by about...oh midnight the video of our dreams will be on a master tape and backed up to digital. The next step will be to finish creating the cover art I began last weekend, get the duplicating machines up to speed, start pumping them out, do the packaging, get the online credit card ordering system up and running....c'mon I did say "more or less" right?
At a few seconds over two hours this will surely become an all time HH classic. Yes, I missed a few things, but not much. All I can say is if you have even a remote interest in drag racing, especially Stock and Super Stock you must have this video!
Tomorrow I hope to be able to put up a major update on the site...and YES there will be a few videos available at Mission THIS weekend. First come, first serve.
Another announcement is that starting June 1st (two days from now) all HH videos will increase in price to $30. This is to cover increased mailing costs, the ridiculous charge my bank hits me with to cash U.S. cheques, and the fact the credit card deal takes about that much from my profit.
Orders are nearing 100, right on my expected number up to the time the video is actually available, so keep 'em comin' friends, we're gonna make this work yet!
Thanks!!! LP
An amazing story came our way this evening regarding a local racer/car builder who we understand is fine, but until we get a confirmation will not mention a name. It seems he began putting air in one of the rear slicks and the phone rang...Can you guess where this is going? Somewhere in the range of three to five minutes he came back to the car. At that precise moment with what has been estimated 250 psi the tire proceeded to dismount itself from the wheel. In an instant the side of the (just completed btw) car was gone along with it the wheel and four link. The toilet was blown out of the floor, the sink off the wall. HH was told a piece of wood from the collapsing roof stuck him, causing no serious injury. The sound of the blast was heard by another drag racer in his shop a block or two away. He was one of the first people on the scene. We are currently seeking photos or videos of the scene if anyone cares to send them in.

10:00pm OK, the long-awaited Stock Super Stock video preview is now available for your viewing enjoyment FREE!!. Click HERE for the hiband Cable/DSL version or click HERE for a 56k version. Both require RealVideo plugin. Video from last weekend coming. Please note the music is courtesy of a long time HH visitor Casey Binz.

5:30pm As per usual the glitches happen, the phone rings nonstop, then there's that rather hectic thing called email. Ad to that some personal matters, a job description in the local paper I spent half a day on my resume for and you get the picture. The state of things change about three times per day, so here is where they sit as of now. The video is 'almost' done, I am hoping now for this Friday. A major audio problem popped up today that is now fixed, but it took about five hours this morning to do. I am at the always hair-raising position where I now have to clear off my hard drive (meaning everything that's on tape is the final product and must be perfect as after this there is no going back to fix it) and load in all the remaining footage and do the voice over. This is also the time when I put together the RealVideo promo piece that will be used to push this thing forever. That was three hours ago and I just realized the track with the music was missed, so back to stage one. Hang in there folks this thing is very close and I don't mind saying is AWESOME! I am planning to have the promo vid up late tonight along with this past Sunday's Mission stuff and when I can get to them, all the email updates that have come in. There are a couple I will do now however:
Take a look at our newsletter update here TeamMission.Com - Summit Racing Series May 23rd. The photo page should be updated today or tomorrow also.
The Pacific Northwest Super Comp Assc. website has now being updated. There is some important info posted there about a schedule discrepancy.
And yes, I KNOW this page is WAY too big and should be cut down....it's on my list.. LP
We are happy to announce that at 3:00 a.m. a six page foto BLITZ in the style you have come to DEMAND from this website is now available be clicking HERE..say Holy F... wontcha now.
And remember... typos at 3am don't count around here. Those get fixed tomorrow.
9:45pm update: Please note the following is NOT a misprint:
DON MURRAY STUNS WITH STREET LEGAL 7.348/191.85mph RUN AT MISSION THIS MORNING!!
Every once-in-a-while a drag racing prformance comes from out of nowhere to leave onlookers simply shocked. About 11:00 a.m. this morning at Mission Raceway Park, about as shocking a run as this writer has ever seen became one of those 'all-time' memories. We all knew Murray could run a forty, but just like back when we said the green machine could run sixties, the dude from White Rock pulls a rabbit out of his hat. Don ran 7.50s before he ran 7.60s and now he's run in the 30s, but he ain't never run a .40! Like I said, unbelieveable.
There was a bit of stumble at the lights that some people (not very many though) are saying caused a bogus time, but no way. We've producde all the incremental marks just below. The reaction time is also correct, you'll see in the video tomorrow he sat there a long while up and down on the converter at least once. This WAS a legit elapsed time AND miles per hour. He did it on a single, so the video is just beautiful (as we say look fo it here tomroow).

I have know Don Murray for... oh 15 years. can't remember exactly. The guy used to be wild. I mean... I went for a ride in his Z28 down 200th past Willowbrook Mall one night. That would have made one impressive video lemme tell ya. He got on it HARD even when it wasn't pointed straight. The trans brake made this thing leave so hard on street tires it was amazing...
Ya, Don Murray has come a long ways from the 'Shark' days. Remember that thing front wheels three feet in the air hard on it. Nope, Don became a man today....make that Don Murray became THE man today. Maybe the best part of the whole deal was how he handled it. Sure the video is full of more "Holy Fucks" than anything else I've ever recorded. It shows a content guy, enjoying the moment in a mature, though entertaining, manner. He's been watchin' somebody and it's starting to look pretty good on him. Well done guys.
But all they can do now is build new cars!
Neither car is legal for under 7.50 so all we have left is for Braid to take a shot. At 7.34/191.85 it will be a one, maybe two run shot and that's it. Numbers like this can only be done at MRP and the track has a strict "three strikes and yur out" rule. So go figure. He's got two, maybe three shots at it.
Regardless who does what now, this run will be remembered for a LONG time. LP
TRACK RECORDS SMASHED AT WOODBURN OPENER
Results from Woodburn Dragstrip's 28th Annual Season Opener. First of all, Brian Hough set the FMD track record at 5.51 (was a 5.52 by Henkelman). Gregg Lawrence set the mph record at 257 (Henkelman at 256 was the old record). Pat Austin set low et in FMFC with a 5.73 (which is one of the 10-12 quickest runs anywhere in 2001). Bucky ran a 5.76. In the FC final, Pat beat Bucky, 5.86 to 5.87. Margin of victory was .007! Other winners were:
Mike Henderson - Sat. Super Comp
Jason Heard - Sat. Electronics Cash Bash
Thomas Jackson - No-Electronics Cash Bash

Thank YOU for sending this to us Jon! LP
Have locked myself in the edit bay for the past three days with the Stock Super Stock video almost complete, so today am allowing myself some time out in the glorious sunshine that is the lower mainland of British Columbia in May. From the sounds of things a pretty decent time at MRP yesterday. Thanks to our buddy 'Dragin Don' Murray (WHEN is this guy gonna get a website?) we even have some Canadian Pro Street Association Pro Street results and photos:
1.Dragin' Don 56 Vette 7.583 @184.50 (both ends of the record)
2. Roy Moznick 55 Chevy 7.864 @175.19
3.Bruce Altmayer 66 Nova 8.466 @163.66
4.Brian Lane 55 shoe box 8.904 @157.39
5.Steve Downs 01 S10 9.267 @144.67
Murray says it'll run 40s!

Moznick (near) and Brian Lane.
Bruce Altmayer Chevy
Steve Downs
We also heard of motorcycle racer Jan Cook having a wheelie bar problem and making pretty heavy contact with the tree. Jan is ok (not sure about the bike), and our pal Rich Carlson promises some unbelievable pics later tonight....unless he's sold them all before we get there.
Obviously Murray has the Vette flying as do some of the others, a few here for the first time. Many will be asking "where'e Braid?", so we can tell you he is concentrating on his own series of Pro Street events on both sides of the border, and may (or may not) attend any CPSA shows. All you have to do is ask him and he'll tell you the politics got to him, so he's doing his own thing. While some may be lead to believe this means he's down on the CPSA. On the contrary, he simply wanted to go in a direction the CPSA wasn't. Proof being his current relationship with Murray (CPSA Pres.) which is better than it has ever been. Note the 'hug' pic from last weekend. With a lack of a major pro street group in the US northwest there is easily room for a programs such as his to coexist with the CPSA....so far.
If there was any doubt why Chris Blair decided to move on to LVMS, check THIS.
With how things have been going around here recently, HH is very encouraged by this recent email:
I feel I owe it to Larry to write this letter. Very few people have as much passion towards the sport without being a racer himself. Being sidelined from what I love to do most, due to a long term back injury has been tough on me. I rely on this sight to keep up with what my fellow friends and nemesis's are doing. Though I advertise on this sight it has no bearing on why I'm writing it. Larry and I had a verbal contract for three months of advertising and my banner was up for four months at no extra charge. My thirty dollars is in the mail for the save the sight fund. If the sight stays up and running,my cherub will be in the mail to continue advertising BCR products. Larry is a fair guy and his pricing and product are well worth what little he charges. Please print this Larry - Thanks Greg Henderson.
Thank you very much Greg, it's responses like that which keep me going sometimes. I hope to bring back banner ads (on a monthly basis), but must wait to see how well the new video will sell. We are up to about 50 paid orders in, so am out of the jungle for the moment, but we need to flog a heck of a lot more than that to save this deal. I am also applying for a couple of jobs this week which also may have a bearing on the future of this site. Until some of this gets sorted out, HH will remain as it has the past few weeks.
Thanks again to Greg and the many, many others who make a big effort to support HH.

FLASH!!! Just off the telephone with Bobby D, and what IS the
answer to the question taunting bench racers the world over...
How DO you pronounce his last name?
Bobby de armon
It's French, don't pronounce the d.
Had a great talk with the now much more relaxed Nine Second Man. Heard about his Atco wheelstand Heard about all the friends who helped him. Did you know his car was originally a Z/28? That his traction bars are from Cal Method. And tonight he confirmed we can show ALL the details. Including "The crank and rods...make sure you can see those REAL good" said Bobby D to HH tonight. We got it. Stand by.
Somebody really should make a movie about him and Tiger. What a war for three years those boys had....and from what we hear is FAR from over!! The East coast boyz say "9.99 is NOT enuf!" The challenge is out for the Chevrolet to come east anytime...anywhere. Just gotta be east. I think Bobby deserves a bit of a holiday just now, but it will be interesting if this turns into an immediate race to the 80s..or more?
Regardless, our little MRP has, despite some rough edges, become once again the place to be each year at this time if you want to put some power in your puppy and see what she'll really do.. PLEASE NHRA, don't EVER take this date away from this place....well maybe to October...but whatever. It's taken days to set in that the video of my dreams is in mid-flight. If you don't see much here the next 4-5 days chill. Deal with it.
Musta made some new friends over the past few weeks. Hit count is ridiculous. Welcome then to all the people who up until now have never made HH a regular surfing stop.
A funny thing happened on the way to a nine second sea level Stocker...
Seems just a very few have pro quality still images of the actual run. EVERYBODY wants a shot of De Armond's 9.99, but the wrangling is hot and heavy as to the monetary value of said photograph.. Of course the Digger crew is leading the way, with a couple of local rags already ensuring their use of the magical photos. Apparently ND policy reads something like "any image printed is available, at no charge, to any advertiser". A cockamamie-a-concept as this photographer has ever heard! It will be VERY interesting to see how this turns out. Will a photog or two make enough cashola to retire on? Or coulda couple of images become rare collectors (who will pay) items? A very interesting matter eh?
I have no idea. I shot video. And since video magazines basically don't exist, I'm stuck with what I KNOW is the most comprehensive video coverage of the event. All I wanna do is sell 500 copies of it. How freaking valuable do you think that will ever be? Talk is already of bad fuel, short tracks and bogus clocks. I doubt that talk will ever end. I was told EVERY SS/AA and DeArmond's fuel samples were "sent to the lab". I have heard nothing since, so I must assume these numbers will be forever considered legit. Especially since the ND staff is all over it.
Almost to 50 video orders. Thank you. To those 'special' orders that have come in, thank you from my heart. Logging, and storyboarding are complete. Editing begins tomorrow morning. Happened upon a lil diddy that we're gonna use too. This tape will rock your doorslammer world like nothing before. But I gotta get back to it.
Thanks again you guys.
We have completed the Bremerton Pages and (as noted below) have created a new page for all of the results. Start HERE.
A harsh day of crashes trying to run scripts for photo pages. Bremerton National Open images are in the old format HERE.
Learned we had some incorrent and incomplete info from Sunday. We hope to have more results as soon as we can get them emailed to us.
Fresh off one of the greatest days of drag racing HH has ever seen, we went with a renewed sense of pride to one of the most venerable drag strips in the history of the Northwest. A drag strip we had not been to in almost 20 years, it was but our second trip ever.
Thanks to our sponsors 'Dragin' Don Murray and our 'Street Lethal' friend Glenny Braid (See, somebody other than Bro Jake can call him that...) as well as the National Hot Rod Association, HH enjoyed a race vastly different than the gigantic MRP Federal Mogul.
Across the water from the beleaguered Emerald City lie a number of very small seaside communities. Oak Harbour is directly opposite one of the greatest Naval bases in the United States. The Bremerton Shipyard has hosted the mightiest vessels to ever hoist the stars and stripes, from the battlewagons Missouri and the ship she stands by today, U.S.S. Arizona, to the massive Supercarrier Nimitz.
This is Herm Peterson land and is the place the Land of the Leaders has the home office. Why was it that we had heard so little about this place over the decades?. Welllll. There's a couple of things, not the least of which a setting like few other drag strips. What this place lacks in some areas, it can boast of in others.
The viewing for spectators and shooting for photographers is the best I have seen in probably 30 years. With no guardrails at trackside (because it's still an 'emergency' runway for the adjacent airport, they cannot be placed any closer), and the fact it runs noticeably downhill from about 900 ft to the lights, makes Bremerton a candidate for the George Ray Dragstrip Hall of Fame.
Run by a club, The Handlers, HH had little actual contact with many of them, but those were a great bunch. Not sure how long the strip has been here, but it is in a bit different spot than last time we attended. A high-security airbase during W.W.II, the pit area is more-or-lessa one long road that stretches from the top end at the northeast to a region waaaaaay back in the trees at the southwest portion of the airport. Many short, wide paved areas line the ends of the mile or so long road. I often imagined B-17s parked with rack after rack of bombs awaiting the call over fifty years ago. Today the pits take up the area all around the staging lanes making it a very unique layout, with outstanding pit spots (for viewing the races) for more than a few.
A 50th Anniversary NHRA U.S. National Open, this event featured Nitro Harleys and Pro Street Eliminator for the first time ever in NHRA 'Wally' competition. Not just any Wally either, as all of the 2001 versions include the 50th Anniv. logo. Other classes included Top Comp, Super Stock/Stock Combo, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, and the brackets Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle.
The competition here was stout as many of the division's top runners made the trip. HH will have a number of photo pages up later tonight that will include all the performance hilights (and low lights).
A pair of unconfirmed MRP reports from this weekend included word of a great turnout Friday night at the Street Legal drags, a poor one on Saturday. Either they don't wanna pay more, or they just wanna do it at night...don't push a good thing fellas...
We are up to over 20 video orders now in, thanks very much folks. Today we complete the Bremerton coverage, then tomorrow go right into the video intro. We'll post it the minute it's complete to give all who are awaiting our coming secure online credit card order system a quick buzz.
05.13.01
We're home from Bremerton and their NHRA National Open. Below are almost all the winners. Tomorrow we'll post full results, more info and photos. Overall it was a wonderful weekend at one of the neatest strips in the Northwest. We have some great stuff to present you with once we get some sleep. Thanks to NHRA and the Handlers Car Club for the hospitality and support!

Hi Larry. I only saw the Saturday qualifying this past week-end
so once again HH3 has come through with the goods. I'll be
sending my cheque this week because I HAVE TO HAVE THIS
VIDEO. And of course I want to see HH continue because the
stuff over at nhra.com really IS like watching paint dry! Keep
up the great work.
Bruce
Larry, you *are* THE MAN! Leave it to you to capture history in
the
making, and do it well.
Later bud!

What a weekend! Now we are off for awhile to get this video done. Easy order details coming soon. LP
05.08.01
9:00 p.m. OK, just had third system crash of day. This time on the very last image in the folder! Will have to split up files and redo thumb systems and caption. Next best guess to have over 90 images is midnight. Will be WORTH The wait. So, have you ordered a video yet? See address and price below? Did you know all stills from our postings these past few days have been from video? You've never seen Super Stock and Stock like this on tape before. Help keep HH alive...BUY THIS VIDEO!
8:00 a.m. Well I suppose all those potential major site sponsors who passed on HH are now kicking themselves as we scoop the entire drag racing world with exclusive images of one of the greatest performance days in the history of the sport. Some may have felt the price was too high, but being associated with happenings like this are priceless. Too bad.
Since we do have most every moment of this historic weekend HH has come up with a plan to save the site. Here is the deal: Within two weeks we will have READY FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY, a two hour video featuring ONLY the major Stock and Super Stock action from 'the race'. From the Thursday practice when we saw the AA and A cars lapping the MRP quarter mile like bracket cars through the 'oh so close' runs of Friday and Saturday to the sheer ecstasy of Sunday.
No we will not be able to show every S/SS vehicle there, this will key on the major players in the race to the nines in Stock and the battle of the SS/AA & A cars. You will see drag racing history recorded like it has NEVER been recorded before. Ultra slo-mo runs...exclusive interviews with all the players...the pride, the glory, the heartbreak. PLUS detail shots of every inch of DeArmond's Camaro. From the rear suspension to the interior of the engine. NHRA Tech Guru Jerry Valentine wanted no room for any controversy. When HH asked Bobby and McGalssen if there was anything they didn't want us to show they said "Show whatever you want". This video will defiantly be our crowning achievement. There's only one catch:
To save this site we need to sell 500 tapes as soon as possible. The price of this will be $30 which includes all taxes and shipping. If we cannot sell (at least) 500 copies of THIS, there will be no doubt we are in the wrong business. That's the bottom line, we are taking orders NOW:
Please send cheques or money orders for $30 to:

PS: We'll save all the other cool stuff from the weekend for the HH2001...if we're still around...
More pics from this weekend coming in a few hours...sorry I fell asleep early last nite. LP
We are working to have a major photo feature finished some time later tonight featuring yesterday's amazing day at MRP. We arrived at the track about 7am Sunday, so have a complete and total visual documentation deserving of this day. We knew coming into this weekend that we could be in for a treat so made sure we didn't miss a stroke. HH has over six hours of video including many, many interviews and every run by every important car on site. We also have come up with a crazy plan to not only save this website, but give all you Stock Super Stock fanatics something very special. Stand by.

Hi Larry, I know you had a very busy day on Sat, but one thing you did not mention was one of our fellow Canadians setting the Super Stock record in SS/A. Alain Lee with that 8.82@ 152. Not only a record for SS/A also a Mile per hour record for all Super Stocks I believe.
10:00pm Words completely escape me. It was a day at the digs those who were there will never, EVER forget. For the drag racing purists who treasure Stock and Super Stock eliminators it was a day for the ages. Never have both classes seen a performance exhibition like what was seen this day. Never in the history of the sport has anything like this taken place on the west coast. It wasn't at a super track. It wasn't at a national event. With apologies to the folks at Federal Mogul it was done a plain old points race. The only single day that comes even remotely close to this one for me was an evening in Seattle in the 80s when all three Pro marks fell....but it was nothing like this. Thanks to this thing we call the world wide web, in an hour or so you will all be able to see what a very few got to see today. I'm bagged after four days on the edge of fantasy...but I promise two videos later tonight. One will show Bobby DeArmand, the other Harry Holton. You bet we got 'em.
But first a few notes: A MONSTER thanks to Bill Kraus of the Eagle Motorplex who drove all nite to deliver their Xmas tree to replace the faulty MRP one last night....DeArmand's run came at 8:19 a.m. twenty three years TO THE DAY Jim Waldo (who was here) broke into the tens at Seattle. "I tore that one down too" said Jerry Valentine.
There is just too much to get into here. You wanna see those videos huh...gimme an hour or so.
In the meantime check out:
NHRA,
Nathan Varney's Sportsman Report
Stock/Super Stock Forum and Northern Thunder for more.
6:10am It's been too long. We have all been made to suffer for just too long. For the first time at this event, the best A Stockers in the world will get to run under the best conditions at one of the best tracks of them all. Due to all the oildowns yesterday we begin early today. Up first? Stock Eliminator. I can imagine Joe and Joe Jr. have the car warmed as this is posted ready to be first in the lanes. This WILL be the one and only chance and like Mr. Pond told HH yesterday with a big smile on his face "and I AIN'T gonna lift"!
In Super Stock we hear the Bartons and Bucky have gone home as one local stated "with their tails between their legs". I beg to differ. In an exclusive HH interview yesterday morning we got it straight from their mouths that they swear the California guys are "putting chemicals in their fuel". We interviewed the owner of the world's quickest Hemi Super Stocker, then we asked some NHRA officials. "NO" was the first answer, "The sample is on the way to the lab" was the other. I suppose we'll have to see, for this ain't over by a loooooong shot. Look for all these boys and more to be back here in a year. Like Bob says - OH BABY!
Now, to have these two door classes overshadow the Federal Mogul cars is one thing, but when you mention a class that had all the potential to be the sport's first eight car class in the forties....well it's just another part of what has become the single most thrilling drag race this drag strip has ever staged. But there's one more day.
Yawl cummon back t'nite y'hear! LP
PS: Thanks for coming here yesterday. We had more visits than we have ever had in the history of this webiste. Enjoy it while it lasts folks.
12:30am PHOTOS OF MRP SATURDAY ARE HERE
10:20pm Well, I suppose I should be a good boy and go to bed as Stock Eliminator is on tap for 8am tomorrow...then again nobody ever accused Mrs. Pfister's kid as being 'good'...So get ready folks...gimme an hour and I'll give you some images to die for...Hilights some missed today: Glen Braid and Don Murray side-by-side starting with a pair of 1/8th mile burnouts followed by Braid's 7.56! More wheelstands than most of us have ever seen before....ya I got Cour...Bob Marshall blowing the entire roof off of his TCS Baretta...got that too...and much more !!! coming in a sec. Any takers on a Stocker or two...or three showing up with a 9.99 dial on the window tomorrow. Pond was all smiles after Gord Merkley delivered a trasmission this morning...Chris Whitney got the B/S ET mark at a .31....same to the thou as Waldo! who took the speed mark...yas they had to consult the book for that one.
Oh my. It's just past 6am and there is a gigantic ball of nuclear fusion coming up over the eastern horizon...the sky has none of those soft puffy grey things in it....it's an ever-increasing blue in color....what does this mean?
This means we gotta drag race to see. Check out Jex at Summit for all the play-by-play stuff, then later tonight we'll bring you the photo hilights. I think we begin with Super Pro then go into SS. Not sure where Stock is on the program, but this could be the day.
Oh ya, have I forgot to mention the best damn Federal Mogul cars in the country are here? hehehehehe.
7:45 pm We be home...with some stuff like THIS:

In the first session about 9am, the barometer was down, but Barton caught a Mission hook...

Check out Doug checkin' this action...

That's on one.

Hess said this was"coo" as it was still on one cumin' down...

Houston the Dart has landed.

Yo...a big bounce.

And say goodby to one oilpan. They came back later (see below)
The Stock Super Stock action was amazing. Unlike anything the Northwest has seen in....well maybe ever. The baddest factory muscle cars on Planet Earth put on a show before we fell victim to a still pounding total west coast rainforest downpour. Aluise ran an .01...just like last year here, a bunch of guys ran almost as good...then there was Super Stock where Ogburn/Holton combo hammered a big nail. Hess went .79, but the California Cuda simply came out and ran some kinda number.
CHECK OUT MIKE JEX REPORTING FOR SUMMIT FOR ALL THE NUMBERS.

How does 8.752 strike ya? Almost everybody is taking the left lane, but then we sw this below. Quite possibly the single finest piece of video HH has ever shot. The pics are neat, but in video this will floor you.
Hemis coo

Bucky Hess and David Barton today at MRP. Tomorrow is scheduled to be rainy early then clear. If we miss a morning session, this game could be all but done...as be aware, Hess, Barton, Aluise and a host more will not be here Sunday. It's a 24 hour tow back to SoCal and back east, and these are workin' boyz. But listen, if you know them, bug the hell outta them to come back to this track for the second Federal Mogul just over a month from now This place was a mineshaft a couple of days ago, but the barometer is bottoming out. Keep yer fingers crossed. Regardless, HH is being assaulted with requests of a video of just the Stock and Super Stock cars. It's possible if we get a couple more qualifying sessions in. Super Stock is up right after Super Pro tomorrow morning at 8. If tomrrow is like Wednesday was...a bunch of people hangin' in the California pit think a new SS/AA National Record would not be a problem.
6:50am The Hiband RealVideo is HERE. (28K Version HERE) The compression is a lousy, but we'll redo it early next week. Weather is cool, cloudy and calling for rain later. We're outta here...later.
12:40am Good morning from Beautiful B.C. The video will be another couple of hours, it's really good. Over 30 minutes of what we hope will be Highband Real video tonight, lowband about 6am local time.
oh ya...
There's a pit space for that big black 101 rig...that's right, as this is being posted the Braid team have been thrashing and "WILL BE HERE"! A good race just went ballistic.
Hentges pulled in about 7:30. The champ is here. And the Pro-Max.com car of Pat Austin has a hemi head config for the first time in years.
05.03.01
Sorry for the late posting, but I had the tough job of going from Pond's motor home...to Little's rig ending up in DeArmand's trailer. They all got the HH video tune up...and they ALL saw something to improve on tomorrow. Even though JulieJ said she was muzzled for the weekend, how could she resist posting on the forum that her 69 year old father went 8.77 in Ogburn's Cuda. Oh ya, I heard all kinds of inside stuff tonight....I was a kid in a candy shop. I cannot fathom this getting better but it will.
It's almost 10pm here and the Stockers lead the parade tomorrow morning. How can I NOT sit up and prepare some video and stills of what we got to see in person today....I told you to get ready. Gimme a couple of hours and prepare for a drag racing purist Nirvana of unprecedented proportions. That's right my children, video and stills of ALL the bitchin' run from a test and tune of your dreams...Pond, Hess, Bobby, Howard and all the rest. Every run ONLY on HH. I told ya we were goin' out in style didn't I?
Even through all this maybe THE hilight of my day was meeting and talking WWII fighter planes with Van Isle resident (and dad of Ray Barton Jr.) Ray Barton Sr. An absolute peach of a gentleman who had me mesmerized with stories of Spitfires, Hurricanes, errant Harvards and I book I must read called Angels 22. This one is for you sir. CHEERS! LP
05.02.01
FLASH MRP UPDATE: Our pal Vicki Strell sent word that cars ran at the track today during a private test session. While most are talking about the A Stockers, it seems a few SS/AA dudes have decided to come here for an all-out assault on that mark. The Div. 1 SS/AA Dart of Ray Barton ran an 8.90 followed by an 8.87 today, while California's Dave Rayburn launched his AA Dart to some low nines. Rumor is as many as a DOZEN SS EH cars may be here!!! Oh ya, the Aluise truck and the Santos rig are already here. Take the afternoon off tomorrow for a test session of your dreams starting at noon! HH update to follow tomorrow night.
MORE: Thanks to the Stock/Super Stock Forum: "Bobby DeArmond, Ritch Ahrends, and Gary McGlasson are in Mission" It also seems some weird and wonderful things have been happening among a few SS/A & AA racers from across the land. If you think the alky wars will be stout this weekend, there's a few door guys who may well rip away some of that thunder. We've waited for this for a looooong time. What we dreamed of could pale in comparison to what we may actually get. The weather looks good (maybe not Friday) Just have your video players pumped up people....this old site gonna ROCK for a few dayz!!!
The original plan to end the site at this time has been put off for a week. With a race as big as this weekend's NHRA Federal Mogul at Mission I felt it would be a fitting event to end HH4 with. Nothing has come up to save the site in it's current configuration, so we will cover the race this weekend, leave it up so everyone will have a chance to see it then down we go. Make sure you check back here often as we hope to go out with a bang not a whimper. Look for daily updates starting tomorrow, and if you are into this sport, and live anywhere near Mission B.C. sell the farm, divorce your spouse, load the rug rats into the back seat, just don't miss what could well be the best FM event anywhere in 2001. All the big guns are here in the alcohol classes, in fact Brandon Bernstein put on quite the show downtown this morning, so check your local television newscasts...oh ya Don Murray was there playing for the cameras too. In case you're wondering Glen Braid will not be racing this weekend, they are still waiting for parts, but hope to be at Bremerton next weekend...along with the Bradford Family Fiat AA/FA!!!! What a couple of weeks for Northwest drag racing!

I have updated this page with what I hope is all the email that's come in for posting. If I forgot please feel free to give me a reminder...LP
Coming into this race many people will be asking NHRA Division Six Director Chris Blair (seen in the photo on May 1 1998 at Mission) about his upcoming move to Las Vegas to take over as Drag Strip and Dirt Track Manager. HH got an exclusive interview with Blair that will answer many of the questions:

HH - So Chris, when did this all happen, and was your decision difficult
to make?
This has been going on for a couple of months. I went down there, met with everyone
and received an offer in early March. At the time I just couldn't accept it
and turned them down.
A few days later they came back again and, after several sleepless nights, I
finally said yes. I didn't want this to be one of those things that I would
look back on and say..."what if."
It became official on Monday (April 23/2001) when I talked to Tom Compton.
How did NHRA react?
Everyone at NHRA has been very supportive in my decision. I was up front with
them from the very begining to let them know that I was talking to Chris Powell
at Las Vegas. Chris even went so far as to call Tom Compton to get his blessing.
Later that night Tom called me at home to tell me that he would never stand
in the way of my career and would support whatever decision I made. He told
me that there were several opportunities available for me in Glendora if I wanted
to pursue that move instead.
Following that initial phone call I did a lot of thinking and lost a lot of
sleep. Tom's support really made me realize how great the folks at NHRA really
are and it led me to initially turn down Vegas' offer. I was completely happy
with what I was doing, I enjoy the people I have to deal with and I really love
Port Orchard and the entire Northwest. It was the toughest call I ever made.
I informed both Tom and Len Imbrogno that I had made up my mind and was going
to stay. They were very supportive and guaranteed some great things for me in
the very near future.
A couple of days later Chris Powell called me back and wanted to know why I
had turned him down and what it would take to get me there. Timing was our biggest
obstacle and they went out of their way to accommodate what I needed to do for
my family, my track operators, the division and my own sanity.
I had pretty much made my mind up a couple of weeks ago and finally decided
to give Tom a call and let him know what was going on. He told me that he was
disappointed that I was leaving but looked forward to working with me in the
future on these events."
You're kidding?
"The support that Tom Compton, Len Imbrogno and Graham Light have given
me has been absolutely incredible. All three are very supportive and caring
when it comes to their employees. They also realize that having me running their
premiere facility will enable them to use "The Strip" as the test
center for a variety of new programs.
Late last year I proposed three new programs for NHRA. One of them, the 50th
Anniversary events for member tracks has already been implemented. The others
are still in the developmental phase so my moving to this other position will
help take the projects from note pad to completion.
By the time our conversation had ended Tom was pretty fired up about some of
the ideas I had for the two National events. The last thing he said to me that
day was that "the door to NHRA will always be open for you if you decide
you want to come back anytime in the future."
Keep in mind, when I told Charlie Mancuso at PACE (now SFX motorsports - owners
of the IHRA) that I was leaving them four years ago I had exactly 45 minutes
to write my letter of resignation, pack up my stuff and get out the door."
How will this move effect the remaining Div. 6 races?
"That was one of the key parts to my accepting this job. Initially Chris
Powell wanted me to be in Vegas in time for the Summit Nationals. At the time
I was looking at a very busy schedule, thousands of things to get done and an
assistant who had only been on the job for 10 days. I wanted to make sure that
we resolved things here and had the season underway before all of this occurred.
My plan is to remain on until the completion of the Woodburn event (July 13-15).
That race will mark my 50th as Director and will be my anniversary with the
company. When I first accepted this job I had to call Gene Bergstrom, who was
running the race at Woodburn, to make it official.
Woodburn is my favorite race. Jay and Jim Livingston have supported me from
day one and I wanted my last Division Six event to be with them.
Any idea who will replace you?
There is one candidate that I am supporting who has become an early favorite.
However, I know that Len will do a very thorough job in searching for the best
person to take over.
Will you have much say in who it is?
I hope so. Len really let me get involved with the recent hiring in Division
7 of Charlie Nielson. He knows that both 6 & 7 need to work together and
let me be a big part of that process (as a matter of fact - Charlie will be
attending the Mission event next week to work with me).
Tom, Len and Graham all know that I take what happens in this Division very
personally and I will not turn it over to someone I don't feel comfortable with."
It doesn't seem like four years. What will you come away with
from this position?
"It doesn't seem like four years at first but then I started thinking about
it. When I came here I was 27 years old, single and a whole lot thinner. Now
I'm 31, married, have a son and found some gray hair the other day...how did
that happen?
As far as what I've learned...it would fill volumes and I learn something new
every single day.
Will you miss the Northwest?
"More than you will ever know. This was the most difficult part of my decision
making process. I love everything about this area. It is the most beautiful
place in the world.
I also think the world of the people up here. Division Six is unique in that
it is like one big dysfunctional family. There are times when it can be a bit
annoying but, 99% of the time, it is great.
I know that coming in everyone could have just teamed up against me and shot
me down. Instead, everyone has been supportive in our decisions even if it adversely
affected them. A lot of people got behind what I was doing and helped me in
some very trying situations. You wouldn't get that in other Divisions.
When I first came out here I was homesick for quite some time. Now this place
has become home. This is where I proposed to my wife. This is where my son was
born. This is where I want to be personally. Professionally, I have to make
a choice of living somewhere else.
Will you have anything to do with the tri-oval/road course
at LVMS?
Chris Powell has pretty much given me the green light to do anything I want
with the whole place and is placing me in charge of new event development. I
started going through some of my notes for events I wanted to try at PACE and
plan on implementing them there. It is going to be a very diverse variety that
will include race cars, motorcycles and a few other things."
You never lost that love of dirt track racing did you?
"I tried to get away but it kept pulling me back in. On weekends that I
didn't have a drag race I found myself sitting in the stands at places like
Elma or Skagit watching Sprint Cars.
I love dirt track racing and really look forward to getting back to producing
those events. Our dirt track already has two nationally televised World of Outlaw
events plus some other specials. I plan on making that track the stop for every
major touring dirt series in American.
When I ran a dirt track before the biggest thing we had were some Hav-A-Tampa
Late Model and USAC Sprint Car events (back when Kenny Irwin and Tony Stewart
were racing). At the time I had a very limited budget and couldn't be as creative
as I had wanted...we'll see what we can do here."
Now that you added drag racing to your resume, do you think
the two (dirt & drags) will conflict or compliment what you envision for
LVMS?
"I think the two can compliment each other very well. My idea is to have
a series of "festivals" at the complex to compliment everything. If
I'm having a motorcycle drag racing program during the day then I will look
at hosting a AMA Flat Track or FMX Freestyle event at the dirt track that night.
While those are going on I would have a bike show n' shine in the parking lot
and a amateur Motocross race at the Motocross track (which also falls under
my reign). The same applies to truck drags and Monster Truck shows. The possibilities
are endless.
I believe that I can get them into the track with something they know, I can
hook them into checking out something new at one of the other facilities.
I really hope they do compliment each other and it happens quickly. This fall
I will have a ten day period where I will have a National Event one weekend,
the World of Outlaws finale on Thursday and Friday, and the final Division Seven
points race of the season. If it doesn't work together I may be calling Tom
to take him up on that offer."
This HAS to be a dream job for a kid from Kentucky...
"When I started all I wanted was to find a way to get into the races for
free. My goal then was to save up enough money to buy Mountain Motor Speedway
in Isom, Kentucky and run dirt late models every Saturday night May thru September.
"I've had the best luck in the world when it comes to being in the right
place at the right time. I think it is God's way of making up on the good looks
thing that I missed out on.
My first real job came about when Gary MacIntosh in Russellville,Kentucky called
Fastrack Magazine to place a subscription. He asked them if they knew anyone
in Kentucky who could run a race track and the only person the editor knew in
the state was me. Gary was building a track and he wanted to talk to me but
no one had my phone number...he kept calling every Blair in the Jeremiah phone
book until he found someone who knew me. We hit it off and the next thing I
knew I was working for him.
The next job came about the same way. The guy who was building Thunder Ridge
was at a place called Tarter Gate Company and mentioned that he was thinking
about building a dirt track. It just so happened that I had done a story on
a young race car driver named Josh Tarter a week earlier and he introduced us.
This time around my best friend Roger Slack (who runs the dirt track at Lowe's
Motor Speedway)was talking to Chris Powell. Chris mentioned that he wished he
could find someone who could take over both the drag strip and the dirt track
but he knew there wasn't anyone alive who had experience with both (actually,
there are a couple). Roger told him to give me a call and that's how this whole
thing happened. I wasn't looking for this to happen...it just did.
Hopefully HH can get you one more time for an interview before
you leave.
There will be another time to talk as I will be here for another three months.
Plus, we can do a follow up when I come up for the banquet. I'm hoping enough
people will start advertising to keep HH going forever.

Re: the New Stock/Super Stock Association, these two emails came in:
Hi Larry
Thank you for your kind word, about the Assn:
We managed to match and even exceed our advertised payout.
$1025.to the winner/--$660.runnerup/--$315 Semi/--$155.quarters
We only had 19 cars entered, I'm sure that was because of the weather
forecast. I personally took 3 phone calls
from people that were racers, not looking forward to standing in the rain.
(thank goodness they were only half right)

Larry,
Thanks for the recognition, and I do have a name :) I'm Pat Brooks, I'm
just returning to racing from about a ten year lay off. Formerly I was a
Bracket racer ( Track Champ at both Bremerton and Seattle in the 80s)
and pilot of what is now Rod Stultzs' SS/MA car. I'm being helped by my wife
Wanda and Ken Dodgion (former owner Rod Stultzs' car). Your website is way
cool and I think what you do for NW racers is great. Thanks
Again for the great page

Don Wood, 42, of Salem, Ore., was involved in a high-speed accident
at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore., on April 21, during a Test & Tune
at the track. Wood, at the wheel of his '33 Ford coupe, was in the right lane
when the car veered left at the 800 foot mark, making contact with the wall.
The car came to a rest upside down in the left lane. Wood was transported via
ambulance to Silverton Hospital, and then airlifted to OHSU hospital in Portland.
He suffered a collapsed lung, a few broken ribs, and some swelling around the
brain. He is currently in serious condition, and doctors are cautiously optimistic.

Hey Larry. Long time no talk, so here goes.I don't know if you are aware yet of the death of Dale Feechuck recently. He was a good guy, he got me back in touch with the Mission Raceway crowd, always trying to help me out and keeping me from being my own worst enemy. All of this bad stuff just makes one want to sell everything and go racing. On a personal note, add me to the crowd that hopes that things improve for you enough that you have the TME (time, money, energy) to keep this monster that you have created alive. Regards Leon
Greetings Larry,
I just wanted to let you know there is now a web site
dedicated to the Wednesday night Bracket Racers at
Portland International Raceway. While it may not have
much in the way of glitter and frills, my main objective
is to keep all the local racers up to date on race results
and points. As well as provide information for anybody
interested in racing at PIR. Plus racer pictures and some
other fun stuff. Check it out at:
http://home.pacifier.com/~rampage1/
P.S. Hopefully, an 11th hour sponsor will turn up to help
you keep HorsepowerHeaven up and running. I know I'm not
the only one out here that appreciates all the time and work
you have invested to create the best damn Division 6 web site.
I'd sure hate to see it go. But whatever may happen, best of
luck to you.
Sincerely,
Greg Rollin
