Photo Notes: Because we are basically a video operation, our photo coverage is a very loose deal. We don't shoot all final rounds, we don't shoot all the winners (though we try), we simply put a bunch of images together for your enjoyment. If we missed you please accept our apologies for the reasons could be many from crew guys running in front of us to our sometimes basic neglect. We also often get a lot of some racers, nothing of others. Again the reasons are many, from some being clients we shoot every run of to others being racers, who no matter how hard we try, we rarely get a cool shot of. Call it the HH jinx if you will. Captions are placed under the image when we can easily find out who and what it is. Going through reams and reams of results sheets to find out who's who is a tedious, time-consuming job, and when we run short on time, and cannot confirm (ie: car number) who is in the photo, it is often left blank. We do what we can, and since it's free to you, give us a break before you inform us of your 'concern'. We've been at this long enuf to know we always hear far more about what we didn't post compared to what we did. That's the way this biz goes, we accept it, hopefully you do too. -Larry Pfister

For Immediate Release:

Las Vegas, Nevada – Ed Thornton took his sleek, black and wicked 57 Chevy to the winners circle at the PSCA Summer Nationals Saturday night by turning back Clint Hairston. Thornton 38 from Chino Hills, CA defeated Hairston 28 from Dixon, CA in the final round which took place shortly before Midnight. On paper Thornton was the favorite having run a stout 6.71 in the semifinal. But Hairston was keeping pace and had run 6.83 in his semifinal round win. The Hairston team had qualified in the number 1 position while Thornton and team qualified in the number 2 slot. Surprisingly, Thornton was happy with his spot in the field behind Hairston.

“The way the ladder was lining up, it looked like the number 2 position was the one to have going into eliminations,” said Thornton. “We ran the 4th session with the idea of simply testing our short game – we weren’t going to run all the way down anyway because we wanted to stay in the 2nd spot.”

After making a first qualifying run in the 7.40’s the Thornton team stepped up. Tuner Shane Tecklenburg and Clutch expert Doug Stewart dug into their collective tool boxes to come up with a solid baseline run to get the team into the field by running 6.78.

“We wanted to get a nice position in the field before we tried to run any kind of stellar number,” stated Tecklenburg. “We started off behind the 8 ball there with that first run and once you get that kind of momentum going, you need to go back to what you know will work so you can understand where the mistake was made.”

The first round of eliminations saw Thornton take the win over Giuseppe Gentile with a stout 6.74 which stood as low et of the first round when Gentile left the start line too early and red lighted.

Said Thornton “we finally made a nice run down the racetrack after struggling in qualifying. I came to the track totally prepared after a great nights rest at the Four Queens Hotel and Casino, and the last thing I thought would happen was that I would be late. When he left first my initial thought was that I was late but then I saw my win light on at the finish line so I knew he had redlit.”

In round number two Thornton narrowly beat Monty Berney with a 6.94 to Berney’s 7.16 when Thornton’s mount spun the tires just before the tree. He was able to recover in time to chase Berney down and had the power to pass him somewhere near the 1000 foot mark.

“I’m not sure why it did that in that round,” explained Clutch guru Stewart. “We hadn’t made too much of a change to the tune-up from the previous round, a little clutch and Shane put a small tweak in the power but I’m surprised it shook.”

The Semifinal round saw Thornton take a bye run into the final round but the team was not going to take it easy as they felt lane choice in the final would be key. After watching Hairston make his run a 6.83, Thornton ran Low e.t. of the meet with a 6.71 which of course gave him his choice of lanes in the final.

“We have been making good runs out of the left lane all weekend” said Tecklenburg “and we want to be able to turn up the wick in the final because we know Hairston will be right there. It should be a great race!”

In the final round, Hairston left first and was slightly quicker to 60 feet which put him about a car length ahead of Thornton as the cars crossed the halfway point, but the hard charging 57 ran past Hairston by 1100 feet and collected the win with a 6.66 at 212 to Hairston’s 6.77 at 202.

Thornton had this to say after his run. “We always like racing that team because they are focused just like we are and that really makes us rise to the occasion. I would like to thank Tom and Larry as well as Shane and Doug for putting me here this weekend. We are out here basically running on this track to get as much data as we can for the Street Car Supernationals here in November. It’s going to be the biggest race in history and we want to make a good showing. I am so happy to be taking home the 2000 dollar purse this weekend and my hope is that in November, I will be taking home the check for 25,000 that is up for grabs.”
