It was Jamie Clerf who said it out loud first.
"What a year for Pfister...gotta be the best one...ever".

That's something I would really have to sit down and carefully review to be sure, but one thing is certain. 2001 was easily the best covered in my career. I only picked up the still camera a few times, and when I did the video camera stayed in the box. The video I shot in 2001 is by far...by far, the best moving images I have ever captured. Not surprising much of it comes from two trips to Bakersfield. Then again we gotta bitta Div. 6 stuff that's kinda kool too:

So allow us to begin. Our night-of-nights. (a few days late)

2001

Below is a series of links. ALL of the video is broadband (with a new compression scheme to boot). As for you dial-up people use the download link so you can put it on your computer before playing.

Baaaaaaad Bad
In no particular order we begin with our bad boy video of the year. Sure you can think of dozens of those, but we think this lil 'episode' tops most of 'em. Here's the story...just the stuff we will admit to however. Sunday night at 'a certain national event' Crew Chief Steve took Mighty Mouse up to the starting line for some photographs. I mean it is a street car, and it is street legal with mufflers, lights, etc. Seems they drove around and around that darkened expanse of unfamiliar asphalt trying to find the way up there amid the 'after hours' closed areas, etc. Turns out he only way to go was through the middle of the pro pits. Needless to say, the 'pros' thought it was kinda kool! Here is a very quick look in the car that took the west coast by storm in 2001, Glen Braid's Canso.

Holy....
Speaking of bad boyz, another street legal dude had quite a moment in 2001. Don Murray laid down a run nobody expected, and if ya missed it, will never be repeated....unless he updates the car. It is presented here again along with a Motorcycle 'problem' of epic proportions. Turn the volume up on this one. Caution: much use of 'F' word.

Treed
Twice in 2001 we went to Bakersfield. The line that kept coming up day-after-day throughout both trips was "How can it get any better?" On our first journey we took the Romeo car out for it's first ever public showing. The response was unbelievable. It was here we got to experience something special. A remarkable turn-of-events that was so eerie the hair on my neck stood up....more than once.

It was Saturday night March 10, between 11 and 12. Dave Strell came running up. "C'mere. c'mere. You gotta see this!" Triple W had made a discovery. "Oh sure" I thought "Willy found another cammer or something.....yawn". I followed them anyway, just to be polite. Then in the darkness they all pointed at the plaque beside the tree directly across from our trailer. The name on that plaque? Romeo Palamedes.

It was second time I got shivers that weekend. Of all the places we could have parked as they moved us five times on Thursday before putting us about the 800ft mark behind the stands along the fence. Of the dozens of trees to park beside we park Romeo's car beside 'his' tree. The video is very dark, but you'll get the idea.

Sad
Recently we spoke of the web and the important moments of 2001. Today we post just two of the web site homepages we have archived here at HH. One is the USA Today homepage, the first mainstream web outlet that actually printed the official news that came as such a shock as the Daytona 500 ended.

The second is the NBC homepage, based in New York, as most of us were glued to television sets.

Jerry Who?
This season saw the boldest move by a Northwest drag racer (without the last name Austin) in many, many moons. We got to see Hentges and Santos so many times....but it NEVER got boring. In a year of alcohol dragster racing mastery, one moment stood out. It was the moment we feel the FMD world championship was decided. It was Medford Thursday September 20 about 4:00 p.m. The Oakwood boys came out to test. Santos? Medford? TESTING? THURSDAY? Well folks the war was on and the champ was on the ropes. They simply came out and laid down a shocking 5.70 at 198mph. From that moment on they never looked back until officially claiming another championship. The champ had come bounding off the ropes to begin a winning late round flurry. That run on video is no big deal, but the final from the first Mission Federal Mogul in May certainly was:

Fuel Altereds Forever
My Video Moment for 2001 is easy. Even with all the awesome racing, it's a simple choice. Rat Trap CHRR. There were SO many things about CHRRX, but when I had a video camera in my face.... and ready, one moment sticks. My first ever viewing, let alone shooting of this car would become a Fuel Altered freak's wet dream come true. You know the rest, STILLS ARE STILL HERE and here is a new 'Of the Year' VIDEO STREAM and DOWNLOAD.

Apocalypse Then
We go back to Famoso yet again for a moment that was soooooo surreal it was numbing. No video or pics of this one. I was just sitting in the shade of the tower at the head of staging...oh about 11am when, at a time when not a single car was running, one of the announcers came on to say Allied Forces had started to invade Afghanistan. The war was on. A very loud cheer came up from the stands as I sat there in silence....and wondered what it must have been like here in the late 60s when it was so ugly in Southeast Asia. One more time, this place gave me shivers.

Tasty
The finest food moment of 2001 was my first trip back to Boise in some two years. My first chance to sample the finest pepperoni pizza on the planet. This alone could make pizza lovers come to 'The Original' Firebird Raceway.

Your favorite and mine...
And where were we in May? With our site stats climbing to record levels for weeks, it was a Stock Super Stock extravaganza "the likes of which has seldom been seen in this sport". Will we do another tape in 2001? Maybe. We'll have to wait and see what transpires. Regardless, for 2001 Bobby DeArmand and Harry Holton took most of the headlines when many of the baddest...the quickest, the fastest Stockers and Super Stockers in the world came to the west's most popular sportsman drag strip and put on the show of the year. How many times had we thought about what if in regards to this track? It was a perfect story with a perfect ending, and will probably never be this good again. To have been able to record it and have it come out exactly as envisioned was too much for words...but not for a photo this cool by who else? Rich Carlson. CLICK HERE

Ron 'n Jon
Biggest Boomer of the year by a local has to go to Ron Houneit. I still have his project to complete, but check out these video frame caps from the team's official video.

The Nitro V Twins have, for many years, been a big part of HH. Sadly over those years a number of locals have lost their lives racing these machines. In 2001 we lost Jon Andres, one of the most popular and successful drag bike racers this region has ever seen. At Mission in June, Jon experienced one of career hilights, defeating Houneit in the NHRA 50th Anniversary National Open finals to claim his Wally. Here is that final round.

Smoke em if ya got em
Gee, I hope you're not getting BURNED OUT yet?

Bracket BASHIN!

Look up, waaaaaaay up
Now, if you're a fan of Internet conspiracy theories and all the baggage that goes with them, check this out. A very strange contrail over MRP that some have compared to supposed 'Aurora-type' high speed, high altitude 'U.S. black project' top secret aircraft tracks. This not a normal trail, and the only reason I shot it was because it was the second one I saw...in two weeks in the exact same spot at the exact same time. Rumor is that these things are so fast and fly so high they can actually overfly populated areas like Vancouver with no chance of being identified from the ground. Hmmmm. Or was it simply a scheduled 737 on it's way to Calgary and some weird atmospheric conditions? I never did see this again.

Goose da Snake
Lastly, Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen in possibly their last ever side-by-side race at Seattle.

Thank you for attending this year's News Year's Eve (+4) happening. I know it lost a lot of strength being so late, but it was quite a year, and took some time to put together.

Al Eierdam in Emergency 1 at Seattle. To see what these guys are doing today go here.

More memories of S.I.R. as we prep tomorrow evening's feature.

Television proved to be the thing on Sept. 11, with the web running a distant second in North American households. At Daytona however, it was the web that proved to be the place to be if you wanted to know what was going on. The NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt chat rooms became the world's best sources of news. No doubt about that one. The chat rooms talked about the news the television people would not. And damn if they didn't get it (mostly) correctly and quickly.

What the web did not become was one of a drag racing video delivery system. Bandwidth is still our enemy, and there is nothing on the horizon short of mpeg4 that could make much of a difference. That is probably two years away for the masses. Future releases of Quicktime is based on mpeg4. This will allow for full screen VHS quality...wirelessly. Yup, in your PDA or in a vehicle. When do you think NHRA will have to outlaw wireless video receivers and transmitters in bracket cars?

Our challenge here at HH will be to constantly improve what we post. We're still in test mode with Premier 6 on the Dell. It's so much more than EditDV on our Macs. Took a bit, but figured a way to 'cheat' and get by the WindowsME file size limitation. We also plan on producing our first website from a PC.

And speaking of wireless, we hope to break some new ground sometime in 2002. We have been told a working version of a wireless mpeg4 video system will be in our hands before June. The system is a local one and it is said to be a stunning piece of work.

A live video webcast is something we have dreamed about since 1996 when horsepowerheaven.com first came to the Web.

The first one will change everything.

Sponsors are most welcome

C'mon back later tomorrow. LP
