01/04/02/12/31/01 It
was Jamie Clerf who said it out loud first. That's something I would really have to sit down and carefully review to be sure, but one thing is certain. 2001 was easily the best covered in my career. I only picked up the still camera a few times, and when I did the video camera stayed in the box. The video I shot in 2001 is by far...by far, the best moving images I have ever captured. Not surprising much of it comes from two trips to Bakersfield. Then again we gotta bitta Div. 6 stuff that's kinda kool too: So allow us to begin. Our night-of-nights. (a few days late)
Below is a series of links. ALL of the video is broadband (with a new compression scheme to boot). As for you dial-up people use the download link so you can put it on your computer before playing.
Baaaaaaad Bad Holy.... Treed It was Saturday night March 10, between 11 and 12. Dave Strell came running up. "C'mere. c'mere. You gotta see this!" Triple W had made a discovery. "Oh sure" I thought "Willy found another cammer or something.....yawn". I followed them anyway, just to be polite. Then in the darkness they all pointed at the plaque beside the tree directly across from our trailer. The name on that plaque? Romeo Palamedes. It was second time I got shivers that weekend. Of all the places we could have parked as they moved us five times on Thursday before putting us about the 800ft mark behind the stands along the fence. Of the dozens of trees to park beside we park Romeo's car beside 'his' tree. The video is very dark, but you'll get the idea. Then to see this in the daylight: Click here and here to see the dude who dedicated that tree (and who drove the car in Cacklefest 2001), Jet Car Bob Smith. Sad Recently we spoke of the web and the important moments of 2001. Today we post just two of the web site homepages we have archived here at HH. One is the USA Today homepage, the first mainstream web outlet that actually printed the official news that came as such a shock as the Daytona 500 ended. The second is the NBC homepage, based in New York, as most of us were glued to television sets. Jerry Who? My first chance to sample the finest pepperoni pizza on the planet. This alone could make pizza lovers come to 'The Original' Firebird Raceway.
Your favorite and mine... Ron 'n Jon The Nitro V Twins have, for many years, been a big part of HH. Sadly over those years a number of locals have lost their lives racing these machines. In 2001 we lost Jon Andres, one of the most popular and successful drag bike racers this region has ever seen. At Mission in June, Jon experienced one of career hilights, defeating Houneit in the NHRA 50th Anniversary National Open finals to claim his Wally. Here is that final round. Door Cars? I know it lost a lot of strength being so late, but it was quite a year, and took some time to put together. 12/30/01 Al Eierdam in Emergency 1 at Seattle. To see what these guys are doing today go here. More memories of S.I.R. as we prep tomorrow evening's feature. Television proved to be the thing on Sept. 11, with the web running a distant second in North American households. At Daytona however, it was the web that proved to be the place to be if you wanted to know what was going on. The NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt chat rooms became the world's best sources of news. No doubt about that one. The chat rooms talked about the news the television people would not. And damn if they didn't get it (mostly) correctly and quickly. What the web did not become was one of a drag racing video delivery system. Bandwidth is still our enemy, and there is nothing on the horizon short of mpeg4 that could make much of a difference. That is probably two years away for the masses. Future releases of Quicktime is based on mpeg4. This will allow for full screen VHS quality...wirelessly. Yup, in your PDA or in a vehicle. When do you think NHRA will have to outlaw wireless video receivers and transmitters in bracket cars? Our challenge here at HH will be to constantly improve what we post. We're still in test mode with Premier 6 on the Dell. It's so much more than EditDV on our Macs. Took a bit, but figured a way to 'cheat' and get by the WindowsME file size limitation. We also plan on producing our first website from a PC. And speaking of wireless, we hope to break some new ground sometime in 2002. We have been told a working version of a wireless mpeg4 video system will be in our hands before June. The system is a local one and it is said to be a stunning piece of work. A live video webcast is something we have dreamed about since 1996 when horsepowerheaven.com first came to the Web. The first one will change everything. Sponsors are most welcome C'mon back later tomorrow. LP
