A P-I Sports writer named Joe Sherk pounded out stuff like this Monday morning: KENT Woodstock on wheels? That was the scene at Seattle International Raceway Saturday night as an estimated 21,700 fans crammed the grounds to witness the Seafair Funny Car Championships. The largest single day motor sports crowd in northwest history saw 60 funny cars and: Ed "The Ace" McCulloch successfuly defend his Seafair title by beating Sush Matsubara in the finale which matched the night's two fastest cars. Matsubara set a SIR miles-per-hour record at 230.79. Gary Cromwell run the quickest-ever elapsed time for a Chevrolet-powered funny, 6.57. McCulloch collected his fourth victory in ten days with a 6.53, 225.56 mph triumph over Matsubara, who was plagued by tire problems. The "Ace," who has apparently found the secret to winning after enduring some perplexing problems earlier in the summer, turned in the night's best time, 6.48. Matsubara was next at 6.49 and the Los Angeles driver picked up $1,500 for his losing effort. McCulloch collected $2,000. The Seafair champion, who used to call Forest Grove, Ore., his home, started the trek west ten days ago by winning a race in Reading, Pa. ....to be continued |
