I know I've posted this one before, and I think it's an Emil Neely shot...now there's a guy who just flat disappeared after doing some great work in the late 60, early 70s in the Northwest, many of which were printed in Drag News. I would love to find him. I picked this print up from Doug Harder who posted it in the May 1970 ish of Motorsport in B.C. Magazine. It's Kenny Martin at S.I.R. on March 22, 1970...and I dedicate this postingto Fred Vosk.
Now here's a keeper. The text at the bottom was on the original print making this one of first ever 'handouts'. PS: who ever called him 'Tom'...I always knew him (in the magazines) as 'Tommy'.
Another great old Northwest drag photog whom I have tried to contact to no avail is John Dutton. On August 6, '1960something', he captured these rare views of Sam Balkin's St. Paul, Minn. based Falcon. Where were these photos shot? Ever heard of Van Isle Dragways? A small 1/4 mile strip about 40 miles north of Victoria, B.C. that featured a shutdown 'hill' of massive proportions. On this day Balkins' cammer-powered piece went up against local hero Al Clark in his small-block C/Dragster, and like most every touring star who came here to face Clark (who often filled in when the other booked in car broke), Balkin's low nine second, high 140 mph ride lost the best out-of-three match race. Photos courtesy Doug Harder who once again had printed these in the old magazine.
Speaking of great old stuff, these two shots came to Harder's East Vancouver home in June of 1966. Dandy Dick went up against the Baromus Bros. Anglia out of Seattle on a sunny afternoon in Arlington. Not sure who won, but you gotta love any pic of 'laying down the dust'. Over it's lifetime the Anglia sported both an injected mouse, then a similar rat followed by a blown big block. Again, not sure what was in place during this race.
Not only one of the coolest door cars ever, but easily the bitchinest CC/FD of all time. Seen here at the Winters probably 1966 or so is Joe Davis at the wheel of the famed Colt 45 Mustang 'Funny Car'. The old caption on the back of the original print says that he lost this round to Maynard Rupp. Back in the late 60's this car had such an effect on me that I tried on more occasions than I can remember to build a model with a suspension setup just like this. Aren't the physics of weight transfer a marvelous thing?
...and let me take a moment to thank all of you for helping make HH what it is today. LP |
