07/26/99 Thanks to the magic of the Internet I can share with you different views. The 'regular'-type coverage HH of this event has become a winter project. Please someone remind me about Nov. 30 to do it. Thank you. In the place of our regular coverage please enjoy this high resolution gift from Horsepower Heaven to everyone who had a blast out at MRP last weekend. 07/26/99 1:30 am You have all probably gone to bed by now thinking Pfister slacked off tonight. No I didn't, I just got home. We had some downtime today... In two of the most violent accidents this race track has ever seen, a pair of Lower Mainland drivers walked away with no injuries. "It's a credit to the standards these car are built" said Racers for Christ's Elvon Kaufman here from Oregon. Coming one round apart, the first Super Gas car to loose control at about 1000 ft was the Nova of Brad Powell (Lowermainland hometown not avail * may have been Super Street, sorry it's late, I'm toast ). A hard left turn into the wall just at the finish line saw the front of the car explode into pieces upon impact, throwing the late 60s Chevy over into the right guardrail backwards, where it made heavy contact again. The car is history, Brad got out under his own power. Then not more than an hour or so later, from the same left lane, Bill Evans admitted he hit the breaks too hard in an effort to save a breakout and also turned hard left into the wall maybe 50 ft past where Brad's burgundy paint marks mark the concrete wall. In a near identical situation, the 66 Chevy II shed everything from the valve covers forward in a similar spinning motion ending with it contacting the right wall with the car's tail. "We can maybe save some electronics and the seat" said Bill's brother John. Who would end his advance through Super Comp 30 minutes later... with Bill out there backing him up from the burnout! These two major incidents caused this race to finish at 11:00pm sharp. A long day that began with Jr cars at 7am. I have enough energy left to just give you winners and runner-ups for now: ALL numbers unofficial. Federal-Mogul Dragster-An AWESOME RACE! the BEST of 1999 so far! W- Brad Potter, Pitt Meadows, BC More results coming for the next few days...everyday: Goodnight LP 7.23.99 Warren Johnson RUNS 6.94/201.97!It was a maybe the best single day of the year for me. So much ...so much neat stuff... A guy came up to me at McDonalds about 9:30 tonite, in the mall across from the track. The place was slowly draining of people and cars. "Is Warren Johnson REALLY out there?" This guy asks...I smiled "Oooooo ya". He's there. For those with drag racing in their blood it was an awesome day. For Mission Raceway people it was extra special. The track manager had a tear in his eye. One of WJ's crew guys was heard to exclaim as the boards lit up "Aw this place ain't that good." We saw one of the fastest runs in Pro Stock history. WJ came out here to see what kinda teeth this place had and overpowered the place. No finesse, he just planted his foot and tried to go as quick and fast as he could. It was very cool. Now he can tune it. It chattered like crazy thru 3rd and into 4th, and still went but a hair under two hundred and TWO miles per hour... On page 119 of the latest National Dragster it says the speed record is 202.24. That is gonna get SMASHED tomorrow night about 9:00. The ET mark...6.840....maybe. It's the black car. The soon-to-be Superman car that will run at Woodburn next week, then Indy. The white car will run Seattle. It's no secret people are talking 203...maybe even 204. 80s for sure....70s...NOT completely out of the question. ....and he's not running that gasoline... It's old time drag racing under conditions so many of us have dreamed about for this racetrack. The nitro cars are here, but sorry, WJ is the MAN. The floppers'll make lot's of noise, tons of smoke and maybe even a decent run or two, but WJ...he is the moment. Tomorrow is going to be a very long day. The fast guys run at 6 and 9...approx. Be there. Just be there, to be a part of this. it's that good. It's - THAT - good!
The burnout was loooooong.
No progressive numbers. Tomorrow I promise.
It was flat hauling thru the eyes.
A sight to behild for long-suffering local drag nuts.
Over at the cruise Bert had his SHO Henry J out. More on this thing later...
So was Glen Braid's Mighty Mouse warming up to run Top Comp tomorrow...
"I gotta get Bruce in this. We'd put a blower on the Vette for sure!" -Glen Iggulden
Nice to see ya Rick!
