Saturday April 17, 1999Day Three First thing I did was search out former NHRA Stock world champion Chuck Rayburn to get hold of a bit the spirit of a real racer. Chuck's RealAudio interview is here. After the talk with Chuck I cruised around the pits and saw this in the early morning sky... Pretty spooky eh? |
Is this serene or what?
De Man!
Hey, there's Scott New...so that's what he does.
Very nice local Super Gas/Bracket car.
The Super Stockers were up first this morning, and how about this cool pairing
of Goodfellow's wheelstanding GT/CA '91 Calais and Hopkins' Hemi.
John Schiess wheeled the GT/BA Olds to a number four qualified spot with a -1.152
under 9.748.
Two spots behind him was Jimmy deFrank in the GT/HA Camaro at -1.129 10.601
And the big gun number one qualifier in Super Stock at a -1.252 10.218 was Tony
DeFrank driving the GT/FA Ponitac.
Super Steet boxes...a pair.
The Firebird 'wrecker crew'.
Now here was a car I didn't even take a second look at on Friday, but after
Scott North's 'driven to the track and back to the motel each nite' '84 Buick
AF/SA nabbed the top spot in Stock with an amazing -1.673 13.877 we all stood
up and took notice. He was cruising around the pits later that night with those
Utah plates on the back, and I do think it was mufflered as well. Lost first
round, but what a deal...this right front smoking turbo mobile...PS he set the
record as well at 14.064/95.90.

'Mr car show' (Grand Natl' Roadster Show, Portland, and a new one in Seattle next spring) Dan Cyr had his gorgeous A/SA '69 Camaro here.
Cool pair of small-block stick Mopars.
Can't get enuf of this Camaro!
Bob Elliott had his A/SA '63 Plymouth here from San Marcos, Ca. Ran a 10.61.
My pick for the prettiest A/SA Mopar here was the beautiful '64 Plymouth of
Nephi Utah's Randy Painter.
He ran10.82.
Now this is a Ford lovers wet dream...Robert Pond's A/S 427 1967 Fairlane that
wailed to a best of 10.426.
There's that bike again...this place is perfect for back-lit burnout shots.
Div. champ J. Glenn showed with much promise as he qualified fourth with a .414
(Pro Sportsman Bikes qualify on reaction time). Little did he know how the weekend
would end up.
Just one of the many cool T/C door cars was Scott Howell's '96 Baretta that
qualified with an 8.25/166.
Sad to say I could not find a name for this sweet roadster.
Oh, now THAT'S what Scott New does...

Ford power was rather plentiful in T/C.

Number two T/C qualifier (7.63/175) was the '97 Ron Davis digger of Smithfield Utah's Rick Mickelson. Pretty high tech stuff eh?

I know I have better pics of this thing coming, but had to post a shot of the awesome Mustang of Dennis Fuller. Nitrous-fed BB qualified 7th at a 7.87/175, and you just know there's more in this thing yet.
Just after this shot I got run over by Garvin's push truck...wake up Pfister!
Steve Wong loves just saying the name: "The Coors Light Probe of Todd Hoerner".
632 inch Chevy pushed him to an 8.06/169.
...ya Top Comp is cool!
On the Warpath...
Super Gas hitters...a pair.
Grudge race...for the umpteenth time I bet.
The booked in wheelstander lived up to his press-clippings...
Henry the 8th. So far about the only car that I thought actually looked good
with that weird, changing Ford color.
Pauls a pair...Nero's late model and Bledsoe's '69.
This guy had a SCREAMING small block under the hood and tried all weekend to
break into the 13s. On Sunday morning in first round he went 12.59, lost as
his dial was a 13.80, and I'm sure drove home with a smile on his face!
My mistake... THIS is what Scott New does. says photography "is my passion".
He does nice work too.
