NORTHWEST DIVISION MISSION RACEWAY PARK, MISSION, B.C.

PAT 'FLINTSTONE' AUSTIN WINS A SQUEAKER

MISSION, B.C. - Wishing he could pedal his car like cartoon icon Fred Flintstone, Tacoma, Wash.'s Pat Austin barely edged rival John Hyland to claim the Pepsi Racing Challenge title at Mission Raceway Park. Trailing Springfield, Ore's Hyland all the way downtrack in the final, Austin edged into the lead in the last few feet of racetrack to win, 5.787 seconds to 5.789 seconds, the third of six events in the NHRA Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. "I saw him all the way downtrack," said Austin. "At about half track I was wishing I could put my feet on the ground and pedal [the car], like Fred Flintstone, to get past him." Austin had run as quick as 5.68 seconds in the quarterfinals, but lost a tenth-of-a-second in performance in the semifinals and final as the car shook the rear tires. The loss of acceleration gave Hyland the opening he was looking for. "I was beginning to think I'd got him," said Hyland. "I couldn't see Pat beside me and then, at the finish line, he came blowing by me. I was going 246 mph and Pat was going 253 mph, so he came by me pretty fast. "When we got to the end of the track neither of us knew who had won," Hyland continued. "Then one of the officials gave Pat the thumbs up and I knew it was his race."

Olympia, Wash.'s Dale Carlson claimed the Federal-Mogul when final-round opponent Paul Jones, of Stockton, Calif., was unable to repair his engine and make it to the starting line.

NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES,
NORTHWEST DIVISION MISSION RACEWAY PARK, MISSION, B.C.
SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2000

SHEILDS MUSCLES WAY TO TOP SPOT

MISSION, B.C. - Action at the NHRA Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series continued Saturday at Mission Raceway Park, with drivers >from Western Canada, Washington, Oregon, and California fighting for places in Sunday's final eliminations.

After damaging his engine Friday when the supercharger broke during a pre-race burnout, Las Vegas, Nev.'s Duane Shields bounced back with a vengeance Saturday, snatching the No. 1 qualifying position in Federal-Mogul Dragster with a 5.499-second run. Shields will face Mission, B.C.'s Bob Haffner in the quarterfinals Sunday. Neither Mark Hentges of Federal Way, Wash., nor Tipton, Calif.'s Steve Faria could dislodge the Las Vegas driver from the pole with best laps of 5.51 seconds and 5.52 seconds, respectively. Early pace-setter Dale Carlson of Olympia, Wash., spun the rear tires on both of his Saturday qualifying runs and had to settle for fourth place on the starting grid with a best run of 5.54 seconds.

Tacoma, Wash.'s Pat Austin held on to the pole position in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, his 5.72-second lap from Friday withstanding late challenges from John Hyland and Russ Parker. Parker of Salem, Ore., improved to a 5.76-second run Saturday evening, good for second on the starting grid, edging Springfield, Ore.'s Hyland, who ran a 5.77-second pass Friday. Parker will race against Abbotsford's Mike Giuliani in the quarterfinals.

Eliminations for the Pepsi Racing Challenge begin Sunday at 9:00 a.m., with quarterfinals in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car scheduled to start at 12 noon.

NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES, NORTHWEST DIVISION
MISSION RACEWAY PARK, MISSION, B.C.
FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2000

NO SURPRISES: AUSTIN NO. 1

MISSION, B.C. - Living up to his pre-race billing as 'the man to beat,' Tacoma, Wash.'s Pat Austin is the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the Pepsi Racing Challenge at Mission Raceway Park, the third round of the 2000 NHRA Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.

Driving his Pro/Max Performance Pontiac Firebird, Austin leads the Federal-Mogul Funny Car field with a 5.723-second run at 254.59 mph. "It wasn't that good-a pass," said Austin. "It shook the tires just off the starting line and never really settled down. There's nothing wrong with the track, it's great, I think we just underestimated it."

Another Washington-state driver, Olympia's Dale Carlson, paces the Federal-Mogul Dragster field with a 5.545-second lap at 257.65 mph. The driver of Mike Johnson's Giant Bicycles entry predicts the car will run even quicker as the weekend progresses.

"That's what we're working on," said Carlson, who leads three teams that have traveled from California to compete at the event. "The [5].54 was a good baseline run and we'll tune it up from there; we'll be quicker Saturday. We've got to let all these California cars know we're no pushover."

The Pepsi Racing Challenge, the third event of the 2000 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Northwest Division Series continues Saturday with the Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars receiving two more qualifying laps, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
